## Short answer

AI for a metal fabrication ERP connects quotes, nesting results, material certs, routings and outside processing so estimators, schedulers and quality staff can ask questions in plain language and see the query. It runs on open-weight models inside your network, so customer drawings and pricing never reach a public AI service.

## Intro

A fabrication shop is a sequence of cutting, forming, welding, finishing and outside-process steps, wrapped around raw material that is bought by the sheet, plate or bar. The ERP tracks the job, the routing and the cost, but the biggest swings in margin happen in places the ERP only partly sees: how well the nesting software used a sheet, what happened to the remnant, which heat number went into which weldment, and whether the powder coater returned the parts on time.

Quoting is where shops win or lose work. A request arrives with a STEP file or a PDF, and the estimator must price material, laser or plasma time, press brake setups, weld hours, finishing and freight within hours. The data that would make that estimate better, actual machine time and scrap on similar parts, sits in job history that nobody has time to search.

Traceability is the other pressure. Structural work to EN 1090 or AWS D1.1, pressure equipment, rail, food equipment and defense work all require that material test reports and heat numbers follow the part through cutting and welding. When an auditor or a customer asks for the cert behind a specific serial number, someone opens three systems and a binder.

This page covers where private AI on top of a fabrication ERP actually helps, what it needs from your nesting, MES and quality data, and the limits worth stating up front: it does not replace nesting engines or welding engineers, it makes their output searchable and comparable.

## Pain Points

### Quotes depend on one estimator's memory

**Detail:** Shops keep winning the work the estimator remembers pricing well, and losing money on the families they remember badly. Actual burn-in time, press brake setups and weld hours from past jobs are in the ERP but hard to retrieve by part similarity.

### Sheet utilization and remnants disappear into the nest

**Detail:** Nesting software knows the yield for each sheet, but ERP costing often uses a flat scrap factor. Remnants are not always booked back as inventory, so the same offcut gets re-bought as new plate.

### Heat and lot traceability is manual at the weld step

**Detail:** Mill test reports (EN 10204 type 3.1 or equivalent) are filed by receipt but the link to the individual cut part and weldment depends on discipline at the floor.

### Outside processing is a blind spot

**Detail:** Plating, powder coat, galvanizing and heat treat jobs are sent out on a PO operation. Late returns, rejected lots and rework are discovered when the job misses the ship date.

### Changing customer drawings mid-job

**Detail:** A revised print arrives after material is cut. Which jobs, nests and POs are affected is a manual search across the order, the routing and the shop floor.

## Use Cases

### Similar-part quote assistant

**Description:** The estimator uploads a part description or selects a past part; the assistant retrieves comparable parts, shows actual machine and weld hours against what was quoted, and suggests a starting estimate with the sources listed.

**Erp Objects:** Quote lines, job routing, labor and machine time transactions, material issues, scrap reports

**Outcome:** Quote turnaround improves on families the shop has built before, and estimators can see where past quotes ran short.

### Nesting yield and remnant reconciliation

**Description:** Compares nesting output with material issued in the ERP, flags jobs where actual consumption differs from the nest, and lists remnants that should be on hand.

**Erp Objects:** Material issues, lot and heat records, inventory locations, nesting result files, job material requirements

**Outcome:** Cuts duplicate plate purchases and shows where scrap factors in costing do not match reality.

### Heat number and MTR lookup

**Description:** A quality tech enters a job or serial number and gets the heat numbers, MTR documents and weld records that go with it, assembled into a draft traceability package for review.

**Erp Objects:** Lot and heat numbers, receiving records, job material allocations, weld logs, certificate documents

**Outcome:** Shortens the time to answer a customer or auditor traceability request from a manual search to a reviewed package.

### Weld procedure and welder qualification check

**Description:** Before a job is released, the assistant checks that the required WPS and PQR references exist for the base material and thickness, and that assigned welders have current qualifications on file.

**Erp Objects:** Routing operations, quality plan, WPS and PQR documents, welder qualification records

**Outcome:** Missing procedure or expired qualification is caught at release rather than at inspection.

### Outside processing tracker

**Description:** Lists operations out at vendors, due dates, promise dates and rejected returns, and drafts follow-up emails to the vendor for buyer approval.

**Erp Objects:** Outside operation POs, receipts, inspection results, supplier scorecards

**Outcome:** Late vendor returns are escalated while the job can still be re-sequenced.

### Drawing revision impact

**Description:** When a revised print arrives, the assistant identifies open jobs, cut parts, nests and POs tied to the old revision and drafts the hold list for the scheduler.

**Erp Objects:** Item revision, open jobs, nests, purchase orders, shop floor traveler

**Outcome:** Reduces scrap from building to a superseded revision.

### Schedule explanation for the sales desk

**Description:** Customer service asks why a job is late; the assistant traces the routing, queue at the press brake or weld cell, and any material or outside-process holdup, and returns a plain-language answer.

**Erp Objects:** Job status, work center queue, material allocations, outside operations

**Outcome:** Fewer interruptions to the scheduler for status questions, with answers that match the shop floor data.

## Architecture

**Overview:** The AI layer reads the ERP, nesting output and quality documents through read-only interfaces and answers within the permissions of the requesting user. Customer prints and pricing remain inside your network.

**Layers:**

#### ERP and shop connectors

**Detail:** Read-only access to jobs, routings, inventory, lots and purchase orders through API or approved SQL views, plus import of nesting reports and machine data where the shop collects them.

#### Semantic layer

**Detail:** Maps your work centers (laser, plasma, brake, weld, paint), material codes and gauge or thickness conventions to business terms so questions resolve correctly across jobs.

#### Model serving

**Detail:** Open-weight models served with vLLM or Ollama on a single GPU server in the shop's IT room or in a private cloud, sized for estimating, quality and scheduling users.

#### Retrieval and agents

**Detail:** Retrieval over live ERP queries and indexed MTRs, WPS documents and customer specs; agents draft emails, hold lists and traceability packages for human approval.

#### Governance and audit

**Detail:** Every question and generated query is logged by user; customer-restricted jobs can be excluded from retrieval for people without access.

## Deployment Options

### Air-gapped on-prem

**Fit:** Shops doing defense, nuclear or controlled-technical-data work where drawings cannot leave the facility.

**Detail:** A local GPU server, local indexes and no outbound path; model updates are moved in by an approved process.

### Private cloud tenant

**Fit:** Shops that run the ERP in a hosted environment and have no server room.

**Detail:** A dedicated tenant with private networking to the hosted ERP, isolated from shared AI services.

### Hybrid

**Fit:** Multi-location fabricators with a different ERP or nesting setup at each site.

**Detail:** Shared governance and model service with per-site connectors, so each site's data stays where it is.

## Compliance

### The assistant retrieves factory production control records, welding coordinator documents and traceability data you already keep. Certification and conformity remain with your quality system and notified body.

**Framework:** EN 1090 and ISO 3834 (where you hold the certification)

### It checks that referenced procedures and qualifications exist at job release and highlights gaps. Procedure approval is an engineering decision.

**Framework:** AWS D1.1 and customer welding specifications

### On-prem or in-region deployment keeps controlled technical data inside your boundary, supporting your own compliance program; your empowered official owns the determinations.

**Framework:** ITAR / EAR for controlled drawings

### Searchable traceability and a log of every answer help you respond to audits and corrective action requests; the quality manager approves what goes out.

**Framework:** Customer quality clauses (AS9100, ISO 9001, rail, pressure equipment)

## Integration Notes

- Nesting software outputs (for example reports from SigmaNEST, Lantek, or machine-tool vendor nesting) are imported as files or via their database; formats differ, so mapping is done per shop.
- Heat numbers are matched to cut parts through ERP lot allocations; where the shop does not record heat at the cut step, discovery proposes where to capture it.
- Remnant inventory is only useful if offcuts are booked back; the assistant reports the gap between theoretical and booked remnants rather than assuming accuracy.
- MTR PDFs are read with OCR and linked to receipt lines; low-confidence extractions are queued for a person to confirm.
- Outside processing is read from PO operations and receipts, including partial returns and rejections.
- Write-backs are drafts only: emails, hold lists, requisitions and traceability packages for approval through the ERP's workflow.

## Product Fit

### ERPray

**Why:** Estimators, schedulers and quality staff get grounded answers and dashboards over live job, material and purchasing data, read-only, with the query visible.

### Custom build

**Why:** Similar-part quote retrieval, MTR extraction and nesting reconciliation depend on your file formats and quality documents, so they are usually built to measure.

### DataRay

**Why:** Shops whose nesting reports, certs and customer specs live on file shares can query those documents on-prem alongside ERP data.

## Buyer Questions

- How do you link nesting results to ERP material issues, and what happens when our nesting tool is not directly supported?
- Where is heat number captured today, and what does the assistant do when the link is missing?
- Can the quote assistant show the past jobs it used, with actual versus quoted hours?
- How are MTR extractions verified before they enter a traceability package?
- Can customer-restricted jobs be excluded from answers for users without access?
- Does the system write to the ERP, or only draft?
- What GPU do we need, and can it live in our existing server room?
- What do we own at exit: connectors, prompts, indexes and logs?

## Faq

### Can AI improve our quote accuracy?

**Answer:** It can make past data easier to use. By retrieving similar parts with actual machine, weld and finish hours beside what was quoted, it shows the estimator where previous quotes ran short. It does not price for you, and results depend on how consistently jobs were costed in the ERP.

### Does this replace nesting software?

**Answer:** No. Nesting engines optimize layouts, and that work stays with them. The assistant reads their output, compares it with ERP material issues and remnant inventory, and explains differences. It is a reconciliation and search layer on top of the tools you already use.

### Can it produce a traceability package for an audit?

**Answer:** It can assemble heat numbers, MTRs, weld records and inspection results for a job or serial number into a draft for the quality manager to review. Accuracy depends on heat numbers being captured at receipt and at the cut or weld step; missing links are reported, not guessed.

### Is our ERP's own AI enough?

**Answer:** Possibly for narrow tasks inside one product. A private layer helps when answers must span the ERP, nesting files and certificates, when drawings cannot leave your network, or when you need the generated query shown for audit.

### Which fabrication ERPs does this support?

**Answer:** Any ERP with a supported API or approved read-only database access, including job-shop and mid-market platforms such as Kinetic, SyteLine, Acumatica, JobBOSS2, E2 and SAP Business One. Semantic mapping is done per customer, and data quality matters more than brand.

### How long before we see value?

**Answer:** A focused pilot, usually quote retrieval or traceability lookup, typically takes six to ten weeks after discovery. Timing depends mostly on data access and on how clean the lot and heat records are.

### Is this suitable for a small shop?

**Answer:** Often yes for a single use case, such as quoting or traceability, on one GPU or in a private cloud. For a very small shop with few jobs, the ERP's built-in reports and a good spreadsheet may be enough, and we would say so.
