## Short answer

AI for JD Edwards inventory and manufacturing reads Item Ledger (F4111), Item Location (F41021), work order (F4801) and MRP data through AIS and read-only database access, then answers planner and buyer questions in plain English. It explains shortages, cost variances and MRP messages with the underlying rows shown, and any change is proposed for a person to approve.

## Intro

A JD Edwards EnterpriseOne planner usually works across five or six applications to answer one question. Why is work order 482113 short? Open Work With Manufacturing Work Orders, then Inventory Availability, then the MRP message workbench, then the open purchase order inquiry, then the supplier. Each screen is correct and the answer is still assembled by hand, which is why experienced planners keep their own spreadsheets.

The data underneath is well structured. Item Master (F4101), Item Branch (F4102), Item Location (F41021), the Item Ledger or Card File (F4111), Work Order Master (F4801), Work Order Parts List (F3111), Bill of Material Master (F3002) and the open purchase order tables (F4301, F4311) hold nearly everything a planner needs. The problem is joining them quickly and in business language, not missing data.

A private AI layer can do that join on demand. It does not replace Manufacturing Management, Inventory Management or the MRP engine, and it should not recost, adjust or issue anything by itself. It answers questions, explains why the numbers moved, and drafts the next action for a person to approve in the normal JDE application.

This page describes where that works on EnterpriseOne 9.2 and earlier tools releases, what to be careful about around cost methods and branch/plant security, and how to keep the models and the data on infrastructure you control.

## Pain Points

### Shortage root cause takes six screens

**Detail:** A planner chasing a short work order jumps between Work Order Parts List, Inventory Availability, MRP messages and open POs. Context is lost between each hop, and the answer depends on who is asking and how long they have worked here.

### MRP message volume exceeds attention

**Detail:** Net change MRP generates thousands of expedite, defer and cancel messages. Planners triage by habit, so low-value messages are ignored and a real late-supply risk can sit unread for days.

### Item Ledger variances are hard to explain

**Detail:** When on-hand in F41021 disagrees with a physical count, the answer lives in months of F4111 transactions across receipts, issues, adjustments and transfers. Finding the one bad transaction type is slow, so cycle count differences are written off instead of fixed.

### Cost method surprises hit at period end

**Detail:** Standard cost, average cost and lot cost behave differently, and a rolled-up cost change or a late receipt can swing inventory value. Finance sees the variance in the GL (F0911) weeks after the cause on the floor.

### Customizations hide the real logic

**Detail:** Many JDE sites carry modified applications, custom UDOs and bespoke reports. New staff cannot tell which behavior is standard and which is local, so every question depends on a few long-tenured people.

## Use Cases

### Work order shortage explainer

**Description:** For a work order or a ship date at risk, the agent lists the short components, on-hand by location, open supply, and the specific PO or work order that should cover each gap, with promised dates and supplier history.

**Erp Objects:** F4801, F3111, F41021, F4311, F3411 MRP messages

**Outcome:** Planners get a first-pass answer in under a minute instead of assembling it across screens; they still confirm and act in JDE.

### MRP message triage

**Description:** Ranks MRP action messages by customer impact: which expedites feed a late sales order, which cancels free real cash, and which defers are noise. Groups messages by supplier so a buyer makes one call instead of nine.

**Erp Objects:** MRP message file, F4211, F4311, F4101

**Outcome:** Fewer ignored messages and a shorter daily review; the ranking logic is shown so planners can overrule it.

### Item Ledger investigation

**Description:** Given an item and branch/plant where on-hand disagrees with a count, it summarizes F4111 by document type, user and date, and flags unusual patterns such as repeated adjustments or issues without a matching work order.

**Erp Objects:** F4111, F41021, F4102, cycle count tables

**Outcome:** Count differences are traced to a process cause more often, instead of being adjusted away.

### Cost variance narrative

**Description:** Explains why a work order or item cost moved: component price change, routing rate change, scrap, or a different cost method. Produces a plain-language note finance can attach to the variance review.

**Erp Objects:** F30026, F3002, F3003, F4801, F0911

**Outcome:** Month-end variance review spends less time hunting causes; the numbers remain those computed by JDE.

### Slow and obsolete stock review

**Description:** Finds items with no F4111 movement in a chosen window, tied to open demand, last receipt and supplier return terms, and drafts a disposition list for the inventory manager.

**Erp Objects:** F4101, F41021, F4111, F4211

**Outcome:** A reviewed disposition list in hours rather than a quarterly spreadsheet project.

### Lot and expiry watch

**Description:** For lot-controlled and process items, answers which lots are near expiry, which are on hold and which open orders would consume them, honoring lot status and branch/plant security.

**Erp Objects:** F4108 lot master, F41021, F4211, F4801

**Outcome:** Earlier visibility of expiry risk; allocation changes are still made by an authorized user in JDE.

### Buyer and planner Q&A

**Description:** Natural-language questions such as which suppliers delivered late on A-class items last quarter, or what changed in safety stock this month, answered with the query visible.

**Erp Objects:** F4311, F43121 receipts, F4102, F4111

**Outcome:** Ad hoc questions stop queueing for a report developer; repeat questions can be saved as governed reports.

## Architecture

**Overview:** The AI layer sits beside EnterpriseOne, never inside it. It reads from approved views over the JDE database and from AIS (Application Interface Services) REST endpoints, retrieves only what the asking user may see, and runs open-weight models on your own servers. Writes go through Orchestrator or business functions only after human approval.

**Layers:**

#### Read access

**Detail:** Read-only database views over F4101, F4102, F41021, F4111, F4801, F3111 and open PO tables, under a dedicated database login, or AIS data service calls where you prefer to stay on supported interfaces.

#### Semantic layer

**Detail:** Plain-language definitions of branch/plant, cost method, order status codes and UDC values, so the model uses your meaning of 'open', 'short' and 'obsolete' rather than guessing.

#### Security mapping

**Detail:** Branch/plant, business unit and row security are mapped to the asking user, so a planner for plant A does not see plant B quantities or costs.

#### Model serving

**Detail:** Open-weight models served with vLLM or Ollama on your GPUs or a private cloud, with retrieval over BOM, routing and procedure documents. No prompts or rows leave the boundary.

#### Action and audit

**Detail:** Every question, query and answer is logged. Proposed actions are routed to an approver and executed via Orchestrator or an existing JDE form, never directly in tables.

## Deployment Options

### On-prem with your JDE servers

**Fit:** Defense, aerospace and regulated sites that keep EnterpriseOne in their own data center

**Detail:** GPU server next to the enterprise server and database, read-only database login, no internet egress. Suits air-gapped or ITAR-sensitive environments.

### Private cloud or sovereign tenancy

**Fit:** Sites running JDE on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or another hosted provider

**Detail:** Model serving in the same tenancy and region as the JDE database, reached over private networking. Data residency follows the tenancy.

### Hybrid with read replica

**Fit:** Busy production systems where reporting load is a concern

**Detail:** AI queries run against a read replica or reporting copy so planners never compete with order entry or MRP for resources.

## Compliance

### Inventory valuation and cost changes remain in JDE with its approval and audit trail. The AI layer is read-only, logs each question, and cannot post journals or adjustments.

**Framework:** SOX and internal controls

### Technical data stays inside the customer's controlled environment. The architecture lets the customer restrict access to US persons and avoid external model APIs; the customer owns the compliance determination.

**Framework:** ITAR and EAR (defense and aerospace)

### Lot genealogy answers come from the same lot master and ledger rows used for recalls, with the source rows shown for review.

**Framework:** Lot traceability (FDA, FSMA, GMP)

### Mapped to JDE user, role and branch/plant security; service accounts are read-only and scoped to named views.

**Framework:** Access control and least privilege

## Integration Notes

- AIS Server exposes EnterpriseOne forms and data services over REST; use it for supported reads and for Orchestrator-triggered actions on tools releases that support it.
- Direct read access should go through database views, not base tables with write grants, and be documented for your auditors.
- UDC tables (F0005) and next numbers must be read to decode status and type codes; do not hard-code them in prompts.
- Cost level, cost method and branch/plant processing options change what 'cost' means; capture them per item in the semantic layer.
- Custom tables and modified applications are common; inventory them during discovery so answers do not assume vanilla behavior.
- Schedule heavy extracts away from MRP and period-end processing, or use a replica.
- Orchestrator Studio can host approved actions such as creating an expedite request or placing a lot on hold after human sign-off.

## Product Fit

### ERPray

**Why:** Grounded Q&A, shortage and variance explainers, and dashboards over live EnterpriseOne data, read-only by default with the query shown.

### DataRay

**Why:** When planners also need answers from BOM spreadsheets, supplier quality documents and shop floor logs alongside JDE.

### Custom build

**Why:** Approved write-back agents through Orchestrator, or private retrieval over a heavily customized JDE estate.

- Does anything write to JDE, and through which interface?
- How are answers verified against F4111 and F41021 for a sample of items?
- Which models run locally, and does any prompt or row leave our network?
- What happens to the layer when we upgrade EnterpriseOne?
- Who maintains the semantic layer as UDC values and cost methods change?

## Faq

### Can AI read JD Edwards inventory data safely?

**Answer:** Yes, if access is read-only and scoped. The usual pattern is a dedicated database login limited to reporting views over tables such as F41021 and F4111, or AIS data service calls. The assistant uses the asking user's branch/plant security, shows the query it ran, and logs every request, so planners and auditors can trace any answer to the underlying rows.

### Does it replace JDE MRP?

**Answer:** No. MRP still calculates requirements and messages. The AI layer helps planners triage messages, explain shortages and spot patterns that the standard screens make slow to see. If your MRP parameters are wrong, AI will explain the symptoms faster but it will not fix the planning logic. Parameter and lead time clean-up remains a separate effort.

### Will it work with our customized JDE?

**Answer:** Usually yes, after discovery. The risk is not custom code itself but assumptions about standard behavior. We inventory custom tables, modified applications and local status codes first, then encode them in the semantic layer so the assistant uses your definitions instead of vanilla ones. Heavily modified costing is the area that needs the most testing.

### Can it post inventory adjustments or change work orders?

**Answer:** Not by default. The first release is read-only. If you later want actions, they should go through Orchestrator or an existing JDE business function after a named approver signs off, with an audit record. We recommend starting with drafts, such as an expedite request, and only automating the lowest risk actions.

### Is Oracle's own AI enough for JD Edwards?

**Answer:** Oracle provides tooling and features for EnterpriseOne, and if they already answer your planners' questions, use them. A separate layer makes sense when you need models on your own hardware, questions that cross JDE and non-JDE data, or answers tuned to your cost methods and customizations. Evaluate both against a real question list.

### Which models are used and where do they run?

**Answer:** Open-weight models in the Llama, Qwen, Mistral, Gemma or gpt-oss class, served with vLLM or Ollama on your GPUs or private cloud. Choice depends on question complexity and hardware. Smaller models can handle structured lookups well; harder variance explanations may need a larger one. We test candidates on your own question set.

### How long before planners see value?

**Answer:** A read-only pilot for one plant typically takes a few weeks once database views and security mapping are agreed. The slow parts are usually approvals and building a trustworthy test set, not the AI itself. Plan for planners to compare answers against what they already know before relying on them.
