## Short answer

In Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, a wave is a batch of shipment lines released to the warehouse together. A wave template defines which wave steps run (for example reserve, replenish, create work), and work templates plus location directives then turn the wave into pick work. Inventory journals are a separate tool: they post stock adjustments, movements, transfers and counts directly against on-hand without a sales or purchase order.

## Kind

## System

dynamics

## Erp

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management

## Module

Warehouse management / Inventory management

## Query

dynamics 365 supply chain wave planning

## Alternate Queries

- dynamics 365 supply chain inventory journals
- d365 scm wave template setup
- d365 inventory adjustment journal how to post

## Applies To

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management with the Warehouse management module and WMS-enabled items (warehouse management processes). Menu names can shift slightly between releases.

## Steps

### Set up wave planning from scratch

**Items:**

Confirm the warehouse is WMS-enabled (Warehouse management > Setup > Warehouse > Warehouses) and the item's storage and tracking dimension groups have the Use warehouse management processes option on.

Define the wave step codes and wave step methods you need (Warehouse management > Setup > Waves), such as replenishment, work creation and containerization.

Create a shipping wave template (Warehouse management > Setup > Waves > Wave templates). Set the wave template type, add the steps in the order they should run, and set the Automatic processing and Automatic release options if wanted.

Create a work template for outbound pick work (Warehouse management > Setup > Work > Work templates) with the order type Sales orders, then add the Pick and Put steps.

Create location directives (Warehouse management > Setup > Work > Location directives) so the system knows which locations to pick from and put to.

Release a sales order to the warehouse (Warehouse management > Release to warehouse), or let a batch job do it, then process the resulting wave from the outbound waves page.

Check that work was created, then pick it on the Warehouse Management mobile app.

### How a wave actually flows

**Body:**

A sales order line released to the warehouse becomes a shipment line on a load. The wave template that matches the line (through wave template queries and filters) decides which steps run. The most common steps reserve inventory, replenish pick locations, and create work. When the wave is processed, the status moves through its lifecycle until work exists for the floor to execute.

Waves are the throttle on the warehouse. A wave with one hundred shipment lines produces one hundred lines of work in a controlled burst, while a wave template with automatic release produces waves continuously. Tune this to staffing and dock schedules, not to what the order desk happens to release at 9 am.

### Why wave work is not created

**Body:**

The usual failure is that the wave processes but no work is created. The cause is almost always missing or non-matching setup: the work template query does not match the order type, no location directive matches the item and warehouse, or inventory is not reservable at a pick location. The wave log and the work creation history on the wave show the specific reason for each line.

Our existing page on wave processing where work is not created goes through these checks in detail. Start from the log, not from guesses.

### Inventory journals, the other half of the question

**Body:**

Inventory journals are used when stock changes without a business document. Journal names are configured under Inventory management > Setup > Journal names, and the journal type decides the behavior: Movement, Inventory adjustment, Transfer, Counting, BOM and Production. Each journal has lines with item, warehouse, quantity and dimensions, and nothing changes on-hand until you post.

On WMS-enabled items, ordinary inventory journals are restricted for the warehouse-managed dimensions. Use the warehouse-specific journals under Warehouse management (movement, adjustment, counting) so location and license plate stay correct. Posting a journal with the wrong journal type is the most common source of surprising on-hand values.

**Code:**

- Inventory management > Journal entries > Items > Inventory adjustment
- Inventory management > Journal entries > Items > Movement
- Inventory management > Journal entries > Items > Transfer
- Warehouse management > Journal entries > Movement / Adjustment / Counting

## Pitfalls

- Releasing orders to the warehouse faster than the floor can pick, because the wave template has automatic release on with no scheduling.
- Using an inventory adjustment journal on a warehouse-managed item and wondering why location-level on-hand disagrees.
- Copying a wave template without checking its query, so two templates match the same lines in an unpredictable order.
- Posting a counting journal without first reviewing the variance, which writes the difference straight to the inventory and ledger accounts.

## Ai Angle

An assistant grounded in the environment can read the wave log and the shipment lines and tell a planner in plain language which line failed and which setup record is missing. For journals, it can draft the lines from a spreadsheet and show the posting preview for human approval before anything is posted. Netray's ERPray is read-only by default and shows the query it ran, and can run inside your own network.

## Faq

### What is a wave in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management?

**Answer:** A wave is a group of shipment lines that the warehouse processes together. Processing a wave runs the steps defined on its wave template, typically reserving stock, replenishing pick locations and creating work. It controls when and in what volume work reaches the floor.

### What is the difference between a wave template and a work template?

**Answer:** The wave template decides which lines go into a wave and which steps run. The work template decides what work is created from those lines: the pick and put steps, quantities and sort order. Both must match the order type for work to appear.

### Do I need inventory journals if I use sales and purchase orders?

**Answer:** Yes, for anything without a document: opening balances, damage write-offs, found stock, location corrections and counts. Orders move stock through their own postings, journals handle the exceptions.

### Can I undo a posted inventory journal?

**Answer:** No, a posted journal is not reversed in place. You post a new journal with the opposite quantities and a clear reference. Check ledger posting for the journal name first so the correction hits the right accounts.
