## Short answer

In Epicor, open Part Maintenance and use the copy action to create a new part from an existing one, then set the part number, description and any fields that must differ. Add revisions on the part's revision area (or through Engineering Workbench for managed method of manufacture), and maintain customer part numbers through the part cross-reference. Asset numbers live in Fixed Assets, not Part Maintenance.

## Steps

### How to copy a part and set it up

**Items:**

- Open Part Maintenance and search for the part you want to clone.
- Use the Actions menu to find the copy option (menu labels vary by version; search the actions list for 'Copy').
- Enter the new part number and description. Choose what to copy, such as plants, warehouses, price lists and attachments, if the dialog offers those options.
- Save, then review the Detail tab fields that should not carry over: product group, class, type (purchased or manufactured), tracking, costing method.
- If the part is manufactured, create the new revision. In basic setups add a revision in Part Maintenance; with Engineering Workbench, check the method in, approve it, and the revision becomes available to jobs.
- Set the Customer Part Cross Reference: link the customer, the customer's part number and your part, so order entry can look up by either number.
- Check plant and warehouse data, because a copied part may still need plant-specific cost and planning settings before it can be used.

## Sections

### What copying does and does not carry over

**Body:**

Copying a part duplicates the master record and optionally related data, but it does not guarantee the manufacturing method, approvals or cost layers are right for the new item. Treat the copy as a head start and verify product group, UOM, lead times and costing.

If the new part is a variant of an existing assembly, copy the engineering method too, then revise quantities and operations. Keep a note of the source part in the description or a user-defined field so planners understand the lineage.

### Revisions on a new part

**Body:**

Revisions separate versions of the method for the same part number. A new part usually starts at revision A, with approval controlling whether jobs and MRP can use it. If jobs cannot pull the method, the usual reason is that the revision is not approved or effective on the date of the job.

Where a company wants engineering control, use Engineering Workbench: check out, change, check in, approve. Without it, revisions can be edited directly, which is faster but less auditable.

### Customer part numbers and asset numbers

**Body:**

Customers often order using their own part number. The part cross-reference ties that number to your part so order entry, packing slips and invoices can show the customer's number. Maintain it by customer, and review it when a customer renumbers.

Asset numbers belong to the Fixed Assets module (Asset Maintenance and the asset register). If you are looking for asset numbers on equipment, search the Fixed Assets area or a BAQ on the asset table rather than Part Maintenance.

## Pitfalls

- Copying a part with plant records carried over can leave wrong default warehouses and costs in a different plant.
- Unapproved revisions are invisible to job entry and MRP, which looks like a missing method.
- Duplicate customer cross-references for the same customer and part cause the wrong number to print.
- Assuming asset numbers are part attributes sends users to the wrong module.

## Ai Angle

An assistant on your Epicor data can compare a copied part to its source and list the fields that differ, or list parts with no approved revision, or customers with missing cross-references. These are read-only checks over part, revision and cross-reference tables; the person still makes the changes.

## Faq

### Where is copy part in Epicor?

**Answer:** In Part Maintenance, look in the Actions menu for the copy option. If you cannot see it, check the menu security and your version, or use a DMT part load as an alternative.

### How do I set up a revision on a new part in Epicor 10?

**Answer:** Add the revision in Part Maintenance or Engineering Workbench, build the method, then approve it. Jobs and MRP use only approved, effective revisions.

### How do I add a customer part number in Epicor?

**Answer:** Use the part cross-reference setup: link customer, customer part number and internal part. Order entry can then search by either number.

### How do I find asset numbers in Epicor 10.1?

**Answer:** Use Fixed Assets, specifically Asset Maintenance or the asset register, which hold asset IDs, class and cost. A BAQ over the asset tables works for lists.
