## Short answer

Create the work center in CR01 first, then the routing in CA01 using that work center on each operation, and define production supervisors in customizing (OPJ2). Link the BOM and routing in a production version (C223) so production orders and planned orders can be created.

## Kind

## Erp

## Applies To

SAP ECC 6.0 and S/4HANA on-premise, discrete manufacturing

## Steps

### Build the PP master data in order

**Items:**

- Create the work center with CR01: enter the plant, work center name and category (for example 0001 for machine), then fill the basic data with description, person responsible and usage.
- On the work center default values tab set the control key, standard value key and the units for setup, machine and labour times.
- Create the capacity from within the work center: enter capacity category, available capacity, shift and utilisation. Assign cost center and activity types on the costing tab.
- Define production supervisors in customizing: Production > Shop Floor Control > Master Data > Define Production Scheduler (OPJ2 and the surrounding nodes), per plant.
- Create the routing with CA01: enter the material, plant and group, then fill the header with usage (1 for production), status (4 released) and lot size range.
- Enter the operations: operation number (0010, 0020), work center, control key, base quantity, and the standard values for setup, machine and labour.
- Assign BOM components to operations in the routing, save, and then create the production version (C223) linking BOM alternative and routing group counter.

## Sections

### The work center in CR01

**Body:**

The work center is where capacity, costing and scheduling data live. The basic data holds the control and responsibility information, default values supply defaults for new routing operations, capacity data feeds capacity planning and scheduling, and costing links the work center to a cost center and activity types so confirmations post cost.

Choose the standard value key carefully. It defines which time parameters (setup, machine, labour) are used and how they relate to costing. A mismatch between standard value key and activity types is a frequent reason for a wrong order cost or missing cost postings.

### The routing in CA01

**Body:**

A routing is a sequence of operations performed at work centers to make a material. Selection of the routing for an order depends on the usage and status and the lot size range. Operation entries carry the work center, control key, base quantity and standard values, and later drive scheduling, capacity requirements, costing and confirmation.

Alternative sequences and parallel sequences exist for more complex flows. For a first implementation keep one sequence, one operation per real work step and the right control key (for example PP01 for ordinary in-house operations with confirmation and costing).

**Code:**

- CR01 create work center CR02 change CR03 display
- CA01 create routing CA02 change CA03 display
- C223 maintain production version (links BOM and routing)
- Tables: CRHD (work center header), PLKO/PLPO (routing header/operations), MAPL (material assignment), MKAL (production version)

### Production supervisor (production scheduler)

**Body:**

A production supervisor, called production scheduler in older releases, is a responsibility group for shop floor control, defined by a code per plant in customizing and assigned to the material in the MRP or work scheduling view. It does not represent a specific user; it identifies the person or team responsible for a set of materials and is used for selection in order lists and reports.

Define the supervisors with OPJ2 or through the customizing path above, then maintain the production supervisor field on the material's work scheduling view (MM02). Production order selections like COOIS can then be run by supervisor.

### Common setup errors

**Body:**

If a production order cannot be created because no routing is found, check that the routing status is released, the usage covers production, the lot size range includes the order quantity, and the production version is valid. For MRP-created planned orders the production version is the link that matters most.

## Pitfalls

- Leaving the routing status at created so it is never selected.
- Forgetting the production version, so orders cannot be created automatically.
- Wrong control key, so the operation cannot be confirmed or costed.
- No capacity category or cost center on the work center, causing scheduling and costing gaps.
- Treating the production supervisor as a user instead of a responsibility code.

## Ai Angle

A grounded assistant can audit this master data for you: materials with a BOM but no production version, routings without released status, work centers with no cost center, or operations with no standard values. It reads the PP tables on-prem and lists the exceptions for planners to fix, leaving changes to the master data owners.

## Faq

### What is the transaction code to create a routing in SAP?

**Answer:** CA01 creates a routing, CA02 changes it and CA03 displays it. Work centers are created with CR01, and the production version that links BOM and routing is maintained with C223.

### What do I need before creating a routing?

**Answer:** At minimum a material with a work scheduling view in the plant and a work center with a valid control key and cost data. A BOM is not needed to create the routing, but it is needed to create a production version.

### What is a production supervisor in SAP PP?

**Answer:** It is a responsibility group per plant, defined in customizing and assigned on the material work scheduling view. It lets you select and report production orders by the responsible team. It is not tied to a user ID.

### Why does my production order not find a routing?

**Answer:** Typical causes are an unreleased routing status, a usage that excludes production, a lot size range that misses the quantity, or an invalid or missing production version. Check these in CA03 and C223.
