## Short answer

A JD Edwards sales order goes on hold when Sales Order Entry applies a hold code, most often for credit limit, minimum margin, price or manual review. Find the hold code on the order header, then release it from the Release Held Orders program with the proper authority, or fix the underlying cause and let the order re-evaluate.

## Steps

### How to find and release the hold

**Items:**

Open the order in Sales Order Entry (P4210) and look at the header. A held order shows a hold code in the header fields or a hold indicator in the row; note the code.

Look up the code in the user defined code table for hold codes (system 42, UDC type HC). The description and special handling codes tell you the reason: credit, margin, price, manual.

Open Release Held Orders (P43070) from the Sales Order Management menu. Filter by order number or customer and review the Hold Code and the identified order totals.

Select the order row and choose Release from the row exit. The system checks whether you are authorized for that hold code through the hold code release authorization, and rejects you if you are not.

For a credit hold, check Customer Master credit limit and the customer's open A/R balance first. If the hold is valid, get a credit manager to raise the limit or approve a one-time release.

Re-open the order in Sales Order Entry. Confirm the hold code is gone and the order moves to the next status in order activity rules, then run pick release as usual.

If the order re-holds on release, the condition still exists. Fix the credit, margin or price cause rather than releasing repeatedly.

## Sections

### Why orders get held

**Body:**

Sales Order Management evaluates holds when the order is entered, changed or when certain inventory and pricing events occur. A credit hold compares the order amount plus open receivables against the credit limit held on the customer record. A margin hold fires when gross margin falls below the percentage set for the order or customer group. A price hold fires when the unit price is below a floor or a manual price override was entered. Manual holds are added by users with a hold code to stop shipment for any reason.

Each hold code has its own setup, including which holds are applied automatically and which user roles can release them. This is why two people with otherwise identical access can have different results when trying to release the same order: authority is granted per hold code, not just per program.

**Code:**

-- read-only: held sales order lines (replace order number)
SELECT SDDOCO, SDDCTO, SDLNID, SDAN8, SDITM, SDHOLD, SDNXTR, SDLTTR
FROM F4211
WHERE SDDOCO = 123456 AND SDDCTO = 'SO';

### Tuning holds so fewer orders get stuck

**Body:**

If your credit desk releases most credit holds without changing anything, the hold is generating work but not preventing loss. Review how often each hold code is released unchanged. Raise customer limits where behavior justifies it, or move low-value orders under a threshold so they do not hold. If margin holds fire on freight or kit components, check whether the margin calculation is using the right cost method for the item branch.

Be careful with tolerance changes in production. Changing hold code setup affects every new order immediately, so test in a non-production environment and capture a before and after sample of held orders for the sales operations lead.

### Order status after release

**Body:**

Releasing the hold does not ship the order. It lets the order proceed to the next step according to order activity rules, which define current and next status codes by order type and line type. If the order does not advance, check the next status in the activity rules and whether other holds, such as a backorder or an inventory commitment shortage, are still blocking the line.

For repeated manual releases at scale, do not edit the hold field on the detail table directly with SQL. The release program also writes audit data and triggers follow-on processing that a direct update would skip.

## Pitfalls

- Releasing the hold without checking the underlying credit position, then shipping to a customer who is past due.
- Assuming the hold code release authority is the same as general Sales Order Entry access. They are set up separately.
- Updating the hold field in F4211 with SQL. Audit and downstream processing are skipped.
- Releasing a credit hold and not noticing the order re-held when the next change was saved.
- Treating all holds the same. A price hold released without sales management sign-off can erase margin.

## Ai Angle

ERPray can list held orders by hold code and age, show which customers hit credit holds repeatedly, and display the query behind each answer. It reads under the asking user's role and does not release holds. The release itself stays a human action in JDE, so credit authority and audit trail remain as designed.

## Faq

### Which program releases held orders?

**Answer:** Release Held Orders, program P43070 in most releases, available from the Sales Order Management menus. Your site may have it on a custom menu. Release authority is controlled per hold code.

### Why can I not release a credit hold I can see?

**Answer:** You likely lack authority for that specific hold code. Hold code release authority is set separately from program security, so ask your administrator or credit manager to review the setup.

### Does releasing a hold ship the order?

**Answer:** No. It moves the order forward in order activity rules. Pick release, shipment confirmation and invoicing still follow the normal process.

### Why does the order go back on hold?

**Answer:** Because the condition that triggered it still exists, such as an exceeded credit limit or margin below threshold. Fix the cause or get an approved exception before releasing again.
