## Short answer

In Oracle EBS you create an item in the Master Items form (Inventory > Items > Master Items) while in the item master organization. Enter the item number and description, apply a template, set attributes on the tabs, save, then use Tools > Organization Assignment to enable the item in the child organizations that will stock, buy or build it.

## Query

how to create item in oracle ebs

## Alternate Queries

- oracle ebs create inventory item master organization
- oracle ebs item template assign to organization
- oracle ebs item creation steps
- oracle inventory item attributes setup

## Applies To

Oracle E-Business Suite R12.1 and 12.2 Inventory. Menu paths depend on the responsibility; some sites use Engineering or Product Hub forms.

## Steps

### Steps to create an inventory item

**Items:**

- Choose an Inventory responsibility and switch to the master organization (Change Organization). Item definition is done there; attributes controlled at master level cannot be set in child organizations.
- Open Inventory > Items > Master Items.
- Enter the item number (built from the Item flexfield segments) and description.
- Apply a template from the Tools menu (Copy From or Template). Templates such as Purchased Item, Finished Good or Phantom preset many attributes at once.
- Review attributes across the tabs: Main (primary unit of measure, item status, user item type), Inventory, Bills of Material, Costing, Purchasing, Receiving, Physical, Planning, Lead Times, Work in Process, Order Management and Invoicing.
- Assign the item to categories in the required category sets (Tools > Categories). Mandatory category sets must be satisfied.
- Save, then choose Tools > Organization Assignment and tick the organizations that should use the item.
- Verify in a child organization that the item shows the expected status and subinventory defaults, and check for an item import or sync to other systems.

## Sections

### Master organization and child organizations

**Body:**

EBS uses a two-level model. The master organization defines the item once, with its core definition such as unit of measure and many global attributes. Child organizations (plants, warehouses) then adopt the item through assignment, where some attributes can be overridden locally, such as planning parameters, depending on whether each attribute is controlled at master or organization level.

Item control levels are set in the Item Attribute Controls form. Changing them after items exist is restricted, so design the controls before loading data.

### Templates, status and categories

**Body:**

Templates save time and consistency: they set the flags that make an item stockable, purchasable, buildable, transactable or customer-orderable. Create your own templates rather than ticking dozens of attributes per item. Keep in mind that a template overwrites only the attributes it specifies.

Item status controls which transactions are allowed, and category sets drive reporting, costing categories and sourcing. An item missing from a mandatory category set often cannot be saved or cannot be enabled in an organization.

### Creating many items and common errors

**Body:**

For bulk creation use the Item Open Interface: load rows into MTL_SYSTEM_ITEMS_INTERFACE, then run the Import Items concurrent program, and review MTL_INTERFACE_ERRORS for rejected rows. Public PL/SQL item APIs listed in the Integration Repository are the other option for single-record integrations.

Typical errors involve duplicate item numbers, invalid unit of measure or status, inconsistent attribute combinations (for example, a stockable item that is not transactable, or costing enabled without the right inventory flags), and organization assignment failures when the child organization lacks a required category or cost setup.

**Code:**

- -- Rejected item import rows
SELECT transaction_id, error_message, column_name
FROM mtl_interface_errors
WHERE request_id = :request_id

## Pitfalls

- Trying to create the item in a child organization instead of the master.
- Forgetting to assign the item to child organizations, so purchasing or WIP cannot see it.
- Hand-setting dozens of attributes instead of using a template, giving inconsistent items.
- Changing attribute control levels after items exist.
- Leaving mandatory category sets blank and getting save or assignment errors.

## Ai Angle

An assistant grounded in EBS item data (ERPray, read-only by default) can check a proposed item for duplicates, compare its attributes with similar items and list items missing from a category set or organization. Creation itself should stay with a human or the open interface, with approval for any write. For on-premises EBS, a locally hosted model keeps part numbers and design data inside the network. If you create a handful of items a week, the form and templates are enough.

## Faq

### What is the master organization in Oracle EBS?

**Answer:** It is the organization where items are defined. Child organizations adopt items through organization assignment. Attributes with master-level control are set only in the master, while others can differ per organization.

### How do I assign an item to another organization?

**Answer:** In the Master Items form, with the item queried, choose Tools > Organization Assignment and tick the organizations. Save, then verify in the child organization. The organization must have the setup the item needs, such as categories and costing.

### Can I create items in bulk in Oracle EBS?

**Answer:** Yes. Load the Item Open Interface table MTL_SYSTEM_ITEMS_INTERFACE and run the Import Items program, or use the supported item APIs. Review MTL_INTERFACE_ERRORS for rejected rows after each run.

### Why can I not change an item attribute?

**Answer:** Likely the attribute is controlled at master level and you are in a child organization, or the item status or transactions prevent the change. Check the Item Attribute Controls and switch to the master organization.
