# SAP MMPV Period Closing Error: Opening and Closing MM Periods

## Short answer

MM keeps its own posting period, separate from FI. MMPV (Close Period for Materials Management) moves the current MM period forward one month, MMRV allows posting back into the previous period, and OMSY initializes periods once at setup. The control values are stored in table MARV, one row per company code. Most MMPV errors mean the periods are not in the state the program expects or open work blocks closing.

## Kind

how-to

## System

sap

## Erp

SAP ECC / S/4HANA

## Module

MM / Period Control (MMPV, MMRV, OMSY)

## Query

sap mmpv period closing error

## Alternate Queries

- sap mmpv error handling
- sap how to open mm period
- table sap mmpv
- sap table mmrv

## Applies To

SAP ECC 6.0 and S/4HANA on-premise. In S/4HANA with the material ledger active, also check the material ledger period (CKMLPP and CKMLCP) alongside MM periods.

## Steps

### How to close the MM period and open the previous one

**Items:**

Check the current state in MMRV (Allow Posting to Previous Period). It shows the current period, the previous period and the period before it for the company code.

Before closing, finish goods movements for the month, post pending invoices, and agree with finance on the cut-off. Check that FI periods (OB52) are consistent with MM.

Run MMPV (Close Period). Enter the company code, the new period and year, and run it with the options provided. MMPV moves the current period forward by one month; it cannot skip months.

Watch the log. If it reports that the period cannot be closed, read the message and fix the cause (see below), then run again.

If you need to post into the previous period after closing, use MMRV to set the 'allow posting to previous period' indicator for the company code, post the document, then switch the indicator back.

For a new company code at go-live, set initial periods with OMSY once. Do not use OMSY in a live system to jump periods, because it can corrupt period control and valuation data.

Verify by posting a test goods receipt with today's posting date and confirm in MARV (SE16N) that the periods are as expected.

## Sections

### What the MARV table holds

**Body:**

MARV is the control record for the MM periods. It has one entry per company code, and fields for the current period and fiscal year (LFMON and LFGJA), the previous period (VMMON and VMGJA) and the period before that, plus indicators for posting to the previous period. The related table MMRV is the usual name people give to the transaction; the data is in MARV.

Read MARV with SE16N to confirm period state, but do not change it directly. Use MMPV, MMRV and OMSY. Direct changes bypass checks and can produce documents that no valuation run can reconcile.

**Code:**

- SE16N table MARV filter BUKRS = '1000'
- fields: LFGJA/LFMON (current) VMGJA/VMMON (previous)

### Common reasons MMPV fails

**Body:**

The program expects the new period to be the next one: if the periods are already ahead, or if you try to close a period twice, it stops. Another common cause is a company code where the periods were never initialized or were set with different fiscal year variants across plants.

Open work can also block or confuse the close: pending material documents in update status, locked materials, or open valuation or material ledger runs. Run the standard consistency checks for MM periods and the material ledger, clear update errors in SM13, and rerun at a time when no one is posting.

### M7 053 and period errors on goods movements

**Body:**

After a close, users see 'posting only possible in periods' messages when they use an old posting date. That is the control working. Either correct the date or reopen with MMRV as above. See sap-migo-m7-053-posting-only-possible-in-periods.

FI has its own periods in OB52. A posting can pass MM but fail in FI; see sap-f5-posting-period-closed-error.

## Pitfalls

- Using OMSY in a live system to change periods, which can damage period data.
- Closing MM before the material ledger or finance cut-off is agreed.
- Leaving 'allow posting to previous period' on after the correction posting.
- Editing MARV through a table tool instead of MMPV or MMRV.
- Running MMPV while users are posting goods movements.

## Ai Angle

Month end MM close is a checklist: current period, open documents, blocked invoices, update errors. An assistant grounded in SAP data (ERPray, read-only, role-aware, can run on-prem) can read the period control record and list open items before the close, with the query shown. Running MMPV stays with your finance and MM teams.

## Faq

### What is MMPV in SAP?

**Answer:** MMPV is the transaction to close the current period in Materials Management and open the next one. It updates the period control record in table MARV, one entry per company code. It works one month at a time.

### How do I open the previous MM period in SAP?

**Answer:** Use MMRV to allow posting to the previous period for the company code, post the documents, then switch the indicator off again. If the period is further back, you need MMPV logic and finance approval, and usually cannot go back more than one period.

### What is the difference between MMPV and OMSY?

**Answer:** MMPV is the normal monthly close. OMSY initializes the periods at setup of a company code. Using OMSY in a live system is risky and normally not allowed by finance policy.

### What is the table for MM periods?

**Answer:** MARV holds the MM period control per company code, with the current and previous periods and years. Read it with SE16N, but change it only with MMPV, MMRV and OMSY.
