## Short answer

SAP PP-PI (Production Planning for Process Industries) is the SAP module for batch and continuous manufacturing such as chemicals, food and pharma. A PI sheet is the electronic work instruction generated from a process order through a control recipe, telling an operator what to do and what values to record.

## Kind

## Applies To

SAP ECC 6.0 and S/4HANA (PP-PI is available in both), process orders with master recipes

## Steps

### How a PI sheet is produced

**Items:**

- Create the master recipe (C201) with operations, phases, resources and process instructions. This is the PP-PI equivalent of a routing.
- Define a production version (C223) that ties the master recipe to a BOM so the order can find both.
- Create a process order (COR1) from planned orders or manually. The recipe and BOM are copied into the order.
- Release the order. Release generates control recipes for phases that need operator communication, using the control recipe destination you set in the recipe.
- The control recipe is sent to its destination, where it appears as a PI sheet for the operator. It can be shown, printed, or sent to a process control system or MES.
- The operator completes the PI sheet, entering values and confirming steps. Process messages return the data to the order and, where configured, trigger confirmations and goods movements.

## Sections

### What PP-PI is and how it differs from discrete PP

**Body:**

Discrete PP builds countable items from routings and BOMs. PP-PI models recipes: ingredients, co-products and by-products, variable yield, batch management and quality inspection are first-class. The order object is a process order rather than a production order.

A master recipe replaces the routing, and its operations contain phases, which are the smallest steps with their own resources. Material quantity calculation lets the quantity of an input scale with the batch size, which discrete routings do not handle naturally.

Many plants run both: a PP-PI process order for the batch and discrete production orders for packaging. Batch management with GxP traceability is a common reason to pick PP-PI.

### What a PI sheet and control recipe do

**Body:**

Process instructions are the building blocks of a recipe phase. They can be text instructions, input values the operator must enter, output values, or calculations. SAP groups them by process instruction category and characteristic.

A control recipe is a snapshot of the order phase sent to a destination. A PI sheet is how that snapshot is presented to a person: a formatted document with instructions, checkboxes and fields. The control recipe monitor shows which control recipes were created, sent and returned.

If a plant has an MES or a process control system, the control recipe destination is that system and the sheet may never appear in SAP. The PI sheet is then used mainly as the electronic batch record in SAP.

### Where to find it in the menu

**Body:**

Under Logistics, Production Process, the master recipe, process order and control recipe or instructions folders hold the daily transactions. Configuration sits in the IMG under Production Planning for Process Industries, including the control recipe destination and process instruction categories.

For reporting on process orders, COOIS works with the process order order category, and the process order information system covers both. Master recipe lists and where-used reports are in the recipe menu.

## Pitfalls

- A process order does not release control recipes unless the recipe phase has a control recipe destination.
- Using a routing-based order type for a recipe process fails; PP-PI needs order type category 40.
- Without a production version the order cannot find its recipe and BOM.
- PI sheet layouts depend on the process instruction categories you configure. Standard sheets are plain; any real-looking layout is a custom design.
- Changing the recipe after release does not update control recipes already sent.

## Ai Angle

An ERP-grounded assistant can explain recipe and phase structure from your actual master recipes, and answer questions such as which orders are waiting for a PI sheet to be returned. Because process orders hold batch records, keeping the assistant private and on-prem avoids sending formulation data to a cloud model.

## Faq

### What does PP-PI stand for in SAP?

**Answer:** Production Planning for Process Industries. It covers recipes, process orders, batch management and process-control integration for industries such as chemicals, food and pharma.

### What is a PI sheet?

**Answer:** It is the operator-facing document generated from a control recipe. It lists the instructions and the values the operator must enter or confirm during a process order phase.

### Is a process order the same as a production order?

**Answer:** No. A process order is based on a master recipe and is used in process industries. A production order is based on a routing and BOM for discrete manufacturing.

### Can PP-PI send PI sheets to an MES?

**Answer:** Yes. A control recipe destination can be an external system through the PI interface. Many plants use that route and keep SAP as the planning and costing system.
