## Short answer

Supply type on a work definition component tells Fusion Manufacturing how material reaches the work order and when it is issued: Push (issued by explicit transaction), Assembly Pull (backflushed at the final operation completion), Operation Pull (backflushed when a specific operation completes), Bulk (not tracked, supplied in bulk) and Phantom (exploded through). It is set on each component of the work definition.

## Steps

### How to set and verify supply type

**Items:**

- Sign in with a user holding a manufacturing engineering role, such as Manufacturing Engineer, and open Navigator > Manufacturing and Supply Chain Materials Management > Work Definition.
- Open the work definition for the item and version you plan to produce, or create a new version.
- On the components, select each component and set its Supply Type: Push, Assembly Pull, Operation Pull, Bulk or Phantom.
- For Operation Pull, also set the operation sequence where the component is consumed, so the backflush happens when that operation completes.
- Confirm that the supply subinventory and locator are defined for pull components, otherwise the backflush has nowhere to deduct from.
- Release a test work order and report operation completions to confirm the transactions issue material as expected.
- Review on-hand and the material transaction history to confirm the quantities and the timing match the shop floor reality.

### The five supply types in practice

**Body:**

Push means the stockroom or production issues material to the work order with a manual or scheduled issue transaction. It is the right choice for serialized, lot-controlled or expensive components where you want exact control and a verified pick.

Assembly Pull issues all pull components when the finished quantity is completed at the last operation. It is simple but inaccurate when WIP is long. Operation Pull issues a component when the operation that uses it is reported complete, which matches consumption better in multi-step routings. Bulk marks low-value consumables, such as fasteners or glue, that are not issued per work order at all. Phantom components are not stocked; their own components are exploded into the parent requirement.

### Choosing the right type

**Body:**

Use Push where traceability or lot and serial capture is required, which includes most aerospace and regulated parts. Use Operation Pull where operators already report operation completions reliably. Use Assembly Pull only for short build times. Use Bulk for consumables whose cost you absorb in overhead.

The supply type also affects planning. Demand for Push and pull components flows to supply planning and material availability checks, while Bulk usually does not, so a shortage of a bulk component will not stop the work order but will not be planned either.

### Manufacturing roles in Oracle Fusion

**Body:**

Fusion delivers job roles for the manufacturing functions, for example a Manufacturing Engineer for work definitions and item structures, a Production Supervisor for work orders, and a Production Operator for reporting operation progress and material transactions. Exact role names and the privileges inside them are in the Security Reference for your release.

Do not assign the broad administrator role to everyone. Copy the delivered job role, trim the privileges and give production operators only the reporting privileges they need, so that nobody on the floor can change a work definition and its supply types.

## Pitfalls

- Setting Assembly Pull on a long routing, so inventory appears on-hand for days after the parts were consumed.
- Setting Operation Pull without reporting operation completions, which means nothing is ever issued.
- Using Push for hundreds of cheap consumables, creating a daily workload for the stockroom.
- Backflushing a lot- or serial-controlled item without capturing the lot, which breaks traceability.
- Changing supply type on a released work definition and expecting open work orders to change; they keep their copy.

## Ai Angle

A grounded assistant can read work definitions and transaction history, then point out components where the supply type disagrees with how material actually moved, such as pull components that are always issued manually. Deployed on-prem or in a private cloud, it analyses your BOM and routing data without sending it to a public model.

## Faq

### What is the difference between assembly pull and operation pull?

**Answer:** Assembly Pull issues the component when the finished assembly is completed at the last operation. Operation Pull issues it when its own operation completes, so consumption tracks the routing more closely.

### Where do I set supply type?

**Answer:** On the component lines of the work definition, under the Work Definition task in Manufacturing. It is a component-level attribute, set per work definition version.

### What does bulk mean?

**Answer:** Bulk components are consumed in volume and not issued or backflushed against each work order. They are suited to low-value consumables managed by replenishment instead of work order transactions.

### Which role can change work definitions?

**Answer:** A manufacturing engineering role such as Manufacturing Engineer carries the privileges to maintain work definitions and structures. Production operators and supervisors typically cannot, which is deliberate.
