## Short answer

When one order line needs stock from more than one location or lot, you split the pick: the pick list carries multiple lines, each with its own location and lot and quantity, and the shipment then relieves each separately. The order line is fulfilled when the total picked and shipped equals the quantity. Form names differ slightly by release, so use the mechanism below as a guide.

SyteLine 9.x and CloudSuite Industrial 10.x, lot-tracked and location-controlled items

## Steps

### Split a pick across locations or lots

**Items:**

- Release the customer order line and confirm available quantity by location and lot for the item.
- Generate the pick list for the order (using the pick list generation function) and review the suggested location and lot.
- If the suggestion cannot cover the quantity, edit the pick so the full line quantity is spread across several location and lot rows.
- Ensure the sum of the split quantities equals the required quantity, or intentionally less if shipping partially.
- Confirm the pick (pick list confirmation) so the system records which stock was selected.
- Ship the order. The shipment draws the quantity from each location and lot you picked.
- Verify the order line shows the shipped quantity, any remaining backorder, and that on-hand dropped in the correct locations.

## Sections

### What a split actually changes

**Body:**

A split does not create several order lines. It creates several pick or shipment detail rows against the same order line, each tied to a location and lot. The customer sees one line shipped for the total quantity, while inventory records show separate relief from each location.

For lot-tracked items this matters for traceability: the shipment record then shows exactly which lots left, which is what you need for a recall or a customer certificate of conformance.

### Partial picks and backorders

**Body:**

If total stock is short, pick what exists and ship the partial quantity. The remainder stays open as backorder, according to your order and customer settings. Do not force the full quantity by moving stock informally, because the cost and traceability will be wrong.

Where stock sits in a non-nettable location (such as quarantine), the pick will not suggest it. Move it properly through an inventory transfer first if it is truly releasable.

### Checks before shipping

**Body:**

Confirm that the item's lot and location controls match what you picked, that lots are not expired or on hold, and that reserved quantities for other orders are not being stolen. Run a quick on-hand by location report before and after for a sample order.

In a warehouse using handhelds or an external WMS, make sure the split is recorded once, not both in the WMS and in SyteLine, or inventory will double-relieve.

## Pitfalls

- Splitting quantities that do not add up to the order line quantity.
- Picking from a lot on hold or expired because it was not filtered out.
- Overriding the location without moving the stock, so the book location is wrong.
- Double-recording the pick in a handheld system and in the SyteLine form.
- Forcing a full ship from unavailable stock instead of backordering.

## Ai Angle

A grounded assistant over SyteLine (ERPray or SyteRay) can answer the planning questions behind a split: which locations and lots hold stock for this item, which are reserved or on hold, and which lot combination covers the line with the earliest expiry first. It surfaces the data and the query; the pick itself stays an operator action.

## Faq

### Can one SyteLine order line be shipped from several lots?

**Answer:** Yes. The shipment can have multiple detail rows with different lots and locations against the same order line. The line shows the total shipped, while inventory and traceability records keep each lot separate.

### What happens if I pick less than the order quantity?

**Answer:** You ship the partial quantity and the remainder stays open as backorder per your settings. Do not edit quantities to hide the shortage, because planning relies on the open demand.

### Why does the pick list not suggest a certain location?

**Answer:** The location may be non-nettable, the stock reserved, the lot on hold or expired, or the item restricted by a warehouse setting. Check the location and lot attributes before overriding.

### Does splitting a pick change inventory cost?

**Answer:** Relief follows your costing method, so with standard costing the cost per unit is the same, while with lot or average costing the cost can differ by lot. Check your item costing settings before relying on a specific lot.
