## Short answer

## Full Definition

A blanket purchase order sets commercial terms once and lets the buyer pull material repeatedly without negotiating each time. It usually holds a supplier, items, a negotiated price or price breaks, a validity period, and either a total quantity or a total value cap. Each call-off is a release that carries its own quantity and delivery date.

ERPs implement this in different ways. SAP uses outline agreements, with contracts (ME31K) and scheduling agreements (ME31L), and POs reference the contract. NetSuite has a Blanket Purchase Order record whose lines are fulfilled through ordinary purchase orders. Odoo uses blanket orders under purchase agreements. Infor LN has purchase contracts and purchase schedules that send forecasts and releases to the supplier, and SyteLine supports blanket purchase orders with planned releases.

Blankets are common for fasteners, raw material, packaging and other repeat items, where price is stable and volume is predictable. Their risks are over-commitment, where the quantity or value cap is exceeded without notice, and price staleness, where the agreed price is not revisited while the market moves.

Because releases generate the actual receipts and invoices, the blanket itself is not a supply document for MRP in every system. Check whether your ERP counts the blanket quantity or only the releases as planned supply, to avoid double counting.

## Why It Matters

- It locks price and capacity with a supplier while keeping day to day buying lightweight.
- It cuts the number of POs a buyer must create by turning repeat orders into releases.
- Tracking consumed versus remaining value prevents silent overspend against the agreement.
- It is the right base for supplier schedules and EDI releases, which suppliers plan against.

## In Practice

A plant agrees a 12 month blanket for stainless fasteners up to 60,000 in value at fixed prices. Each month the buyer or MRP creates a release for about 5,000. In month eight the remaining value is only 9,000 while demand is rising, which the ERP shows on the agreement, so the buyer renegotiates the cap before the next release fails to post.

## Faq

### What is the difference between a blanket PO and a regular PO?

**Answer:** A regular PO orders specific quantities for specific dates. A blanket PO sets terms for a period and total, and actual deliveries are ordered through releases against it.

### Does a blanket PO guarantee the supplier a volume?

**Answer:** Not always. Some blankets are firm commitments and some are estimates. The agreement should say whether quantities are binding, and what happens if the buyer buys less.

### How is a blanket PO different from a contract?

**Answer:** In many ERPs the blanket order is the transactional record of a contract. The contract holds legal terms, and the blanket tracks quantity, value and releases.
