## Short answer

ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Accredited labs demonstrate technical competence, valid methods, measurement traceability and impartiality, and issue results with a stated measurement uncertainty.

## Aliases

- ISO 17025
- calibration lab accreditation
- testing laboratory accreditation

## Category

compliance

## Full Definition

ISO/IEC 17025:2017 covers laboratory management and technical requirements: personnel competence, facilities and environmental conditions, equipment, metrological traceability, method validation, sampling, handling of test items, measurement uncertainty, reporting and impartiality. Accreditation is granted by a national accreditation body that is a signatory to the ILAC mutual recognition arrangement, per scope of tests or calibrations.

Manufacturers meet 17025 in two ways. Some run in-house labs and seek accreditation. Many more rely on accredited external calibration labs, because ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949 and ISO 13485 expect measuring equipment to be calibrated against standards traceable to national or international standards. Quality systems commonly prefer or require ISO 17025 accredited calibration certificates, which show the uncertainty and traceability chain.

In an ERP this becomes an equipment and gauge register: asset ID, location, calibration interval, last and next due dates, calibration lab and certificate, and status such as in service, out of tolerance or retired. Production and inspection operations should reference only equipment in valid calibration. SAP Plant Maintenance and QM handle test equipment via maintenance plans and inspection lots; other ERPs often use maintenance work orders or a dedicated calibration tool linked to the item or asset record. When a gauge is found out of tolerance, the system should support looking back at what was measured since the last good calibration.

ISO 17025 accreditation belongs to the lab. A company buying calibration services should verify scope on the accreditation body's directory. Netray does not provide accredited calibration; we help customers query their own gauge and inspection data, such as which lots were measured by a gauge that failed calibration.

## Why It Matters

- Auditors routinely sample calibration records, and an expired gauge in use is a common nonconformance.
- An out-of-tolerance finding can force a lookback over every part inspected since the previous calibration.
- Accredited certificates with uncertainty statements are accepted widely by customers and primes.
- Interval setting and lab choice affect cost, so data on drift history supports better decisions.

## In Practice

A caliper returns from its calibration lab flagged out of tolerance. The quality engineer queries inspection results that used that gauge ID since its last good calibration, finds 11 lots, evaluates risk against tolerance margins and quarantines the two lots that were near limits. The ERP's link between gauge ID and inspection record made the lookback a query instead of a paper search.

## Faq

### What is the difference between ISO 9001 and ISO 17025?

**Answer:** ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system. ISO 17025 accredits a lab's technical competence to produce valid test or calibration results.

### Do I need an ISO 17025 accredited calibration lab?

**Answer:** Not always by law, but many customer and sector standards require or strongly prefer it so certificates show traceability and uncertainty.

### What is measurement uncertainty?

**Answer:** A quantified doubt about a measurement result, stated with a confidence level, which a 17025 lab must evaluate and report on certificates.
