## Short answer

ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems. Published in 2018, it replaced OHSAS 18001 and requires organizations to identify hazards, control risks, involve workers and continually reduce work-related injury and ill health.

## Aliases

- ISO 45001:2018
- OHSAS 18001 replacement
- occupational health and safety management

## Category

compliance

## Full Definition

ISO 45001:2018 uses the same high-level structure as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. It adds specific emphasis on leadership accountability, worker consultation and participation, and hazard identification that covers routine and non-routine activities, contractors and visitors. Organizations that held OHSAS 18001 had to migrate by the end of the transition period set by accreditation bodies.

On a plant floor the standard shows up as hazard registers, risk assessments for machines and processes, lockout/tagout procedures, permit-to-work, personal protective equipment rules, incident and near-miss investigation, emergency preparedness and training records. Auditors sample evidence that controls follow the hierarchy of controls: eliminate, substitute, engineer, administer, then PPE.

ERP is a supporting system. Maintenance modules hold preventive maintenance of guards, interlocks and pressure vessels. Training records tied to employees or work centers show who is qualified to run a press brake or forklift. Nonconformance or CAPA workflows can track incident corrective actions. In SAP, EHS and Plant Maintenance cover much of this. In SyteLine, Infor LN or NetSuite, plants commonly use maintenance work orders plus custom records or a separate EHS tool.

Certification comes from an accredited certification body. It is distinct from legal compliance with regulations such as OSHA in the US, though the system helps demonstrate it. Netray does not certify safety systems; we help connect operational records already in the ERP to the audit evidence.

## Why It Matters

- Injury cost, downtime and insurance premiums make safety a financial issue as well as an ethical one.
- Customers and contractors often require ISO 45001 evidence during supplier approval.
- Overdue maintenance on safety-critical equipment is a classic audit finding that ERP alerts can prevent.
- Training and competence records must be current, or operators may run machines they are not qualified for.

## In Practice

An auditor asks how the plant ensures light curtains on a stamping press are tested. The maintenance planner shows a recurring preventive maintenance order in the ERP for that asset, with completion signatures for the last 12 months and one overdue test that triggered a corrective action. That single trace answers the request without a paper search.

## Faq

### Does ISO 45001 replace OHSAS 18001?

**Answer:** Yes. ISO 45001 superseded OHSAS 18001, and certified organizations had to migrate within the transition period.

### Is ISO 45001 the same as OSHA compliance?

**Answer:** No. OSHA is US law. ISO 45001 is a voluntary management system standard, though it helps organize evidence of legal compliance.

### Can ISO 45001 be combined with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001?

**Answer:** Yes. The common structure allows an integrated management system and combined audits.
