## Short answer

To use Claude with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, expose read-only Orchestrator orchestrations through AIS, wrap them in an MCP server, and connect that server to Claude. You can call Claude through the Anthropic API, AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI, or keep everything local with an open-weight model if data cannot leave your network.

## System

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne

## Capability

claude

## Intro

Claude is a good fit for the awkward parts of E1: long UBE logs, dense planning exports, questions that span several forms, and drafting clear explanations from several records. Teams usually start by uploading a file. The more durable pattern is giving Claude controlled tools into E1 so it fetches what it needs and shows its sources.

The standard way to do that now is the Model Context Protocol. An MCP server sits between Claude and your AIS server and offers a small menu of tools such as get_item_availability or get_po_status. Claude decides when to call them; E1 security decides what they return.

Where Claude runs is a separate decision. Hosted API, a hyperscaler, or none of the above, depending on your data classification.

## Use Cases

### Reading long UBE logs and PDFs

**Description:** Claude handles large context well, so it can read a full JDE.log, a UBE PrintOut and a version's processing options together and explain a failure.

### Planning narrative for the weekly S&OP meeting

**Description:** Pull supply and demand for a product family through tools and have Claude write the exceptions summary with references.

### Customisation and upgrade impact review

**Description:** Give Claude exported object specs, modification notes or retrofit lists and ask it to flag likely conflicts when moving between Tools releases or application updates.

### Order and inventory questions for customer service

**Description:** Ask 'what is open for this customer this week' and let Claude call a few read tools.

### Supplier scorecard commentary

**Description:** Combine delivery and quality data from E1 with email context to draft a business review.

## System Surface

- AIS Server REST and Orchestrator orchestrations as the data and action layer, authenticated with an E1 user token.
- An MCP server (stdio for local use, streamable HTTP for shared use) that maps each tool to an orchestration.
- BSSV and Z-file interfaces for older or write-heavy flows where no orchestration exists; use carefully.
- Direct read-only database views for analytical questions that orchestrations handle poorly, for example large history scans.
- UBE and BI Publisher output for batch reports that Claude can read as files.

## How It Works

### Classify data and choose where Claude runs

**Detail:** Anthropic API for general business data; AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI if you want it inside an existing cloud contract; open-weight on-prem for controlled data.

### Build the orchestrations

**Detail:** Create read-only orchestrations for the first 5 to 8 questions, returning plain labels and bounded rows.

### Write the MCP server

**Detail:** Use an official MCP SDK in Python or TypeScript. Each tool validates inputs, calls AIS, trims the response and returns structured data.

### Authenticate per user where possible

**Detail:** Map the person using Claude to their E1 identity so role and row security apply, or use a service identity with narrow scope for shared tools.

### Connect Claude

**Detail:** Register the MCP server in the Claude client your team uses, or call it from your own application via the API with tool use.

### Add instructions and guardrails

**Detail:** System instructions state the E1 conventions: company and branch/plant defaults, Julian dates, how to read status codes.

### Review logs weekly

**Detail:** Look at which tools are called, which fail and which answers users reject, then refine.

## Example Flows

### Why is this work order short

**Trigger:** Planner asks about work order 123456 in Claude.

**Steps:**

- Claude calls get_work_order to read header and parts list.
- It calls get_item_availability for the short component.
- It calls get_open_supply for inbound POs and transfers.
- It explains the shortage and the earliest cover date.

**Result:** A sourced explanation in one reply, with the identifiers so the planner can verify.

### Upgrade readiness review

**Trigger:** Technical lead prepares for a Tools or application update.

**Steps:**

- Lead exports the list of modified objects and notes.
- Claude reads the list and the release notes the lead provides.
- It groups modifications by risk and suggests a test order.

**Result:** A first-draft impact list for the CNC team to correct and extend.

## On Prem

If your E1 estate is on-prem and your data policy does not allow a hosted model, you have two paths. The first is to keep Claude for non-sensitive work, such as log analysis with identifiers redacted, and run an open-weight model locally for live data. The second is to use Claude through a hyperscaler region you already trust and control, which may satisfy residency but still involves a third-party model provider, so check obligations such as ITAR or customer contracts. The MCP server and orchestrations are identical either way, which means you can swap the model without redoing the integration. Air-gapped sites simply use the local model.

## Security

- Read-only tools first; every write is a separate tool with explicit user confirmation.
- Per-user or tightly scoped service identities in E1; never a shared administrator.
- MCP server in your network with TLS, authentication, rate limits and structured audit logs.
- Return only needed fields and redact pricing or customer identity where policy requires.
- Check the data processing and retention terms of whichever Claude route you choose, and record them.

## Options

### Claude app with manual file uploads

**Fit:** Quick wins for log analysis and planning summaries with non-sensitive data.

**Effort:** Hours.

### In-house MCP server on Orchestrator

**Fit:** Teams with an E1 developer and a Python or TypeScript developer.

**Effort:** About 4 to 8 weeks for a hardened first version.

### Partner build such as Netray, with on-prem model fallback

**Fit:** When you need the same tools to work with Claude and with a private model.

**Effort:** Pilot in a few weeks; production hardening depends on security review.

## Pitfalls

- Pointing Claude at a database user with write access.
- Returning thousands of rows per call and wasting context and money.
- Not telling the model about Julian dates and E1 status codes, leading to subtle errors.
- Treating MCP as a security boundary. It is not; E1 security and your gateway are.
- Assuming a hosted model satisfies export-control rules without review.

## Faq

### Is there an official Claude connector for JD Edwards?

**Answer:** I am not aware of an official one, and you should check current directories before assuming either way. In practice you build or buy a small MCP server that fronts AIS and Orchestrator, which gives you control over what is exposed.

### Can Claude run inside our network?

**Answer:** Claude models are offered through the Anthropic API and through cloud providers such as AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI, not as software you install on your own servers. For a fully on-prem setup, use an open-weight model and keep the same MCP tools.

### Will Claude change data in E1?

**Answer:** Only if you give it a write tool. Start without any. When you add one, make it create a proposal or run a standard orchestration only after the user confirms.

### Which E1 release is needed?

**Answer:** Orchestrator and AIS need Tools 9.2 or later. If you are older or on JD Edwards World, MCP is still possible but the data path will use BSSV, the database or file extracts.

### How is this different from the ChatGPT route?

**Answer:** The E1 side is the same: orchestrations behind a gateway. The difference is the client and the model host. An MCP server is portable across Claude and other MCP clients, so you are not locked into one vendor.
