## Short answer

There are three routes: paste or upload exports into ChatGPT, give a custom GPT or app an action that calls a REST endpoint in front of EBS, or call an OpenAI model from your own middleware. The first is quick but manual, the second needs an internet-reachable and authenticated API, and the third keeps control with you.

## Intro

Teams on Oracle E-Business Suite often start with the simplest experiment: export a report to Excel, drop it into ChatGPT and ask what looks wrong. It works for one-off analysis, and many planners do it already, whether or not IT knows.

The next step is live access, and that is where EBS makes you think. The suite sits behind a firewall, authenticates through FND users and responsibilities, and exposes services through Integrated SOA Gateway or custom APIs. ChatGPT cannot reach any of that unless you deliberately build a bridge.

This page lays out the realistic options, what each exposes, and when a private model is the better answer for regulated or export-controlled data.

## Use Cases

### Analyse a saved report export

**Description:** Upload an Inventory aging or open PO report as CSV and ask for slow movers, duplicate suppliers or odd lead times. No integration required.

### Explain a rejected import

**Description:** Paste an interface error message and the staged row to get a plain explanation and likely fix, with sensitive columns removed first.

### Draft supplier communications

**Description:** Feed a list of late PO lines and have ChatGPT draft the chaser emails in the buyer's tone for review.

### Custom GPT for item and order lookup

**Description:** A custom GPT with an action that calls a narrow read-only endpoint for item availability and order status.

### PL/SQL and report help

**Description:** Ask for help understanding a customisation, a BI Publisher data template or a concurrent program, using code you are allowed to share.

### Training and documentation

**Description:** Turn internal how-to notes for forms like Enter Purchase Orders into step guides for new users.

## System Surface

- Report and export paths: concurrent program output, BI Publisher reports, Excel export from forms, and saved SQL results. This is the zero-integration path.
- Integrated SOA Gateway REST or SOAP services: the managed way to expose selected APIs, if your instance has ISG configured.
- A custom middleware API (for example a small service in front of a reporting schema) that you control, which is what a custom GPT action would call.
- Authentication: EBS uses FND users and responsibilities; ISG typically supports basic and token-based options depending on release. Treat the exact options as version dependent.
- Network placement: EBS is normally not internet-facing. Any ChatGPT action must reach a hardened gateway in a DMZ, not EBS itself.

## How It Works

### Decide the data class

**Detail:** Classify what you may send outside: pricing, supplier terms, technical data, export-controlled drawings. This usually decides the route.

### Start with sanitised exports

**Detail:** Use BI Publisher or SQL to produce a column-limited extract with IDs but no free-text notes. Upload to an enterprise workspace, not a personal account.

### Build a thin read API for live use

**Detail:** Wrap a reporting schema or ISG services in a gateway with a few endpoints: item availability, PO status, order status. Cap rows and fields.

### Describe it as an OpenAPI action

**Detail:** Publish an OpenAPI spec so a custom GPT or app can call the gateway. Use OAuth or a scoped key mapped to a limited EBS user.

### Add rate limits and logging

**Detail:** Log every call with the user identity; return errors the model can act on, such as 'no such item in this org'.

### Review what leaves

**Detail:** Sample real conversations monthly and confirm no restricted data is flowing.

## Example Flows

### Weekly slow-mover review

**Trigger:** Inventory planner exports an aging report each Monday.

**Steps:**

- Planner removes cost columns if policy requires.
- Uploads the CSV to the enterprise ChatGPT workspace.
- Asks for items with no movement in 180 days grouped by subinventory.
- Reviews the list and flags candidates for a cycle count.

**Result:** A starting list in minutes, with the planner verifying in EBS before any action.

### Order status through a custom GPT

**Trigger:** A customer service rep asks about a sales order number.

**Steps:**

- The GPT calls the gateway's order-status action.
- The gateway queries OE order tables via a read-only user.
- It returns status, hold flags and ship dates.
- The GPT writes a short reply for the rep to send.

**Result:** Faster replies without giving the rep a new login.

## On Prem

If your EBS data cannot go to a third-party cloud, do not wire ChatGPT to it. Keep the same pattern but swap the model: serve an open-weight model on your own GPUs, expose the same read-only gateway internally, and give users a chat interface on your network. You keep the OpenAPI-style tool design and lose the ChatGPT front end. For defence, aerospace or controlled technical data this is usually the only acceptable route, because contractual flow-downs and export rules often rule out sending that data to a public SaaS regardless of its enterprise controls.

## Security

- Use enterprise or business workspaces with training on your data disabled; confirm current terms with your vendor contact rather than assuming.
- Never put EBS credentials in a prompt, GPT instructions or an uploaded file.
- Expose only read-only, field-limited endpoints and map each to an EBS user with minimal responsibility.
- Strip or hash personal data (employee, customer contact) before it leaves the network.
- Keep the gateway behind a WAF, with IP allow-listing where the vendor publishes ranges.

## Options

### Manual export plus enterprise ChatGPT

**Fit:** Ad hoc analysis on non-sensitive extracts.

**Effort:** Hours

### Custom GPT action over your own gateway

**Fit:** Narrow live lookups where policy allows a cloud model.

**Effort:** 2 to 6 weeks

### Private model with a Netray-built gateway

**Fit:** Regulated, controlled or customer-restricted data.

**Effort:** 4 to 10 weeks

## Pitfalls

- Employees uploading full vendor price files to personal accounts because no sanctioned route exists.
- Exposing the ISG endpoint directly to the internet to make an action work.
- Trusting numeric answers from a model summarising a large CSV without a spot check against EBS.
- Granting the action's EBS user a broad responsibility for convenience.
- Ignoring multi-org: a lookup that returns items from the wrong operating unit.

## Faq

### Can ChatGPT connect directly to Oracle E-Business Suite?

**Answer:** No, not out of the box. You need an authenticated API in front of EBS, such as ISG services or a small gateway on a reporting schema, that ChatGPT can call. EBS itself should stay inside your network.

### Is uploading EBS reports to ChatGPT safe?

**Answer:** It depends on the data and your workspace terms. Use an enterprise workspace, strip sensitive columns, and follow your data classification policy. For export-controlled or customer-restricted data, a private model is the safer choice.

### Does ChatGPT replace Oracle BI or BI Publisher?

**Answer:** No. It is good for exploration and explanation. Governed, repeatable reports still belong in BI Publisher or your BI tool, where definitions are fixed and auditable.

### Can a custom GPT update orders or POs?

**Answer:** Technically yes through an action, but we recommend read-only. If you need writes, stage them as proposals and post through open interfaces after a person approves.

### What if my EBS is old, like 11i?

**Answer:** 11i has far fewer integration options and is out of mainstream support. Exports and database-level reads are likely your only routes. Weigh a modest upgrade before building anything permanent on it.
