# How to add Slack to SYSPRO

## Short answer

Build a Slack app that calls a small adapter in front of SYSPRO. The adapter reads through e.net business objects or SQL Server and writes through business objects, so slash commands, alert channels and interactive approval buttons all end up as controlled SYSPRO transactions.

## System

SYSPRO

## Capability

slack

## Intro

Slack is less common than Teams among SYSPRO users, but it is the daily tool in many engineering-led and distribution businesses, and in teams that serve technology customers. Those teams want SYSPRO events where they already talk, without anyone opening the client to check a status.

The aim here is lightweight: a few slash commands for lookups, a handful of alert channels, and one or two approvals. Resist building a second SYSPRO inside Slack.

## Use Cases

### Slash command item lookup

**Description:** Type a command with an item code and get on-hand, allocated and on-order quantities by warehouse, as a read-only answer in the channel or privately.

### Order desk channel

**Description:** Post new high-value sales orders, expedite requests and orders placed on hold, with a thread per order for the team to discuss.

### Stock-out and reorder alerts

**Description:** Notify buyers when an item falls below a safety level or when a job is short a component, with a button to open a draft requisition for review.

### Quality hold notifications

**Description:** Post when a lot is placed on hold or a nonconformance is raised, tagging the quality group and linking to the lot in SYSPRO.

### Month-end close reminders

**Description:** Post checklist reminders and the count of unposted batches or unreconciled items, pulled from SYSPRO, to the finance channel.

## System Surface

- SYSPRO e.net business objects for inventory queries, sales orders and purchase orders. Object names and supported fields depend on version, so confirm for your release.
- SQL Server company databases for fast read-only queries such as stock levels (InvMaster and warehouse tables), open orders (SorMaster, SorDetail) and open POs (PorMasterHdr, PorMasterDetail).
- SYSPRO Workflow Services or operator alerts where available, to push an event to your adapter without polling.
- SYSPRO operator and role settings to decide who may do what, since Slack users must be mapped to operators.
- Optionally the SYSPRO web service or REST layer in recent releases for HTTP-based calls.

## How It Works

### Create the Slack app

**Detail:** Define slash commands, interactivity and an events URL, and request only the scopes you need such as commands, chat:write and a channel read scope if required.

### Build the adapter

**Detail:** Expose narrow functions: get_item, get_order_status, create_draft_requisition, approve_requisition. Keep SYSPRO credentials and SQL logins only here.

### Verify Slack requests

**Detail:** Check the signing secret and timestamp on each request, and respond within the acknowledgement window, then continue processing asynchronously.

### Map Slack to SYSPRO operators

**Detail:** Match by email address to a SYSPRO operator, and refuse actions where there is no match or the operator lacks the right.

### Add outbound alerts

**Detail:** Use scheduled queries or SYSPRO events to post to specific channels, with deduplication so the same alert is not posted repeatedly.

### Add approval blocks

**Detail:** Use interactive buttons for decisions, update the original message with the outcome, and store the Slack user, operator and SYSPRO document for audit.

## Example Flows

### Quick stock check by slash command

**Trigger:** A salesperson types a stock command with an item code.

**Steps:**

- Slack sends the command to the adapter with the user ID.
- The adapter maps the user, queries on-hand and allocated by warehouse.
- A private response lists quantities and the next purchase order due date.

**Result:** The salesperson answers a customer in seconds without opening SYSPRO.

### Stock-out alert with draft requisition

**Trigger:** An item falls below its minimum and has no open purchase order.

**Steps:**

- A scheduled query flags the item and its usual supplier.
- A message is posted to the buyer channel with usage and lead time.
- A buyer presses a button to create a draft requisition.
- The adapter creates the draft; a human reviews it in SYSPRO.

**Result:** Stock-outs are noticed earlier and draft purchasing work is prepared, not auto-committed.

## On Prem

Slack is a cloud service, so keep SYSPRO and SQL Server inside your network and let the adapter make only outbound connections where possible, using Slack's Socket Mode if you do not want to publish an inbound endpoint. Run the adapter on a Windows host close to SYSPRO if you rely on COM-based e.net. Put sensitive numbers behind a link requiring SYSPRO sign-in rather than posting them. If you add AI question answering, host an open-weight model locally and pass only the final answer to Slack.

## Security

- Verify Slack signatures on every request and reject stale timestamps.
- Use a least-privilege SQL login for reads and a dedicated operator for business-object writes.
- Keep cost, margin and customer pricing out of public channels.
- Store the Slack bot token and signing secret in a secrets manager.
- Audit each action with Slack user, mapped operator and SYSPRO document reference.

## Options

### Workflow builder with webhooks

**Fit:** Pure notifications from a few events where no write-back is needed.

**Effort:** Days.

### Custom Slack app with an adapter

**Fit:** Slash commands, approvals and consistent identity mapping.

**Effort:** Two to five weeks depending on flows.

### Partner build with Netray

**Fit:** You want natural-language questions answered from SYSPRO data with a private model and approvals.

**Effort:** Scoped per flow, typically weeks.

## Pitfalls

- Slack expects a quick acknowledgement; slow SYSPRO queries cause timeouts unless processed asynchronously.
- Matching users by display name rather than verified email gives wrong operators.
- Alerts without deduplication flood channels and get muted.
- Posting cost data in channels with external guests.
- Hard-coding warehouse codes that differ between companies in a multi-company SYSPRO install.

## Faq

### Is there an official Slack app for SYSPRO?

**Answer:** We are not aware of a universal one, so assume you will build or buy a connector. Ask your SYSPRO partner and check the Slack app directory for current options. A small custom app with an adapter is usually straightforward and keeps you in control of permissions.

### Can Slack users write to SYSPRO?

**Answer:** Yes, through an adapter that calls e.net business objects as a mapped operator, after you check that operator's rights. Start with draft documents that a person finalises in SYSPRO, and only automate final postings where the risk is low and logged.

### How do I avoid exposing the SYSPRO server?

**Answer:** Use Slack Socket Mode so the adapter makes outbound connections only, or publish a single locked-down HTTPS endpoint behind a reverse proxy with signature checks. SQL Server and the SYSPRO application server should remain unreachable from the internet.

### Does this work with multi-company SYSPRO?

**Answer:** Yes, but make the company explicit in each command or map users to default companies. SYSPRO company databases are separate, so queries and business-object calls must target the right company, or you will return or change the wrong data.

### Can AI answer questions in Slack from SYSPRO?

**Answer:** It can, by translating a question into read-only calls on your adapter. For sensitive data use a model hosted on your own infrastructure, show the source of each answer, and enforce the asker's permissions. Treat answers as decision support, not a replacement for reports.
