## Short answer

Wrap any BAPI call with BAPIRET2 error checking, message text building and a safe commit or rollback.

**Type:** select

**Options:**

- abap_true
- abap_false

**Default:** abap_true

#### Local variable prefix

**Key:** prefix

**Type:** text

**Default:** lt

**Blocks:**

#### Declarations

**Body:** DATA {{prefix}}_return TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF bapiret2 WITH EMPTY KEY.
DATA ls_return TYPE bapiret2.
DATA {{prefix}}_messages TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF string WITH EMPTY KEY.

#### Call when the return parameter is a TABLES parameter

**Body:** CALL FUNCTION '{{bapi}}'
  EXPORTING
    {{export_param}} = {{export_var}}
  TABLES
    {{return_param}} = {{prefix}}_return.

#### Call when the return parameter is an EXPORTING structure

**Body:** CALL FUNCTION '{{bapi}}'
  EXPORTING
    {{export_param}} = {{export_var}}
  IMPORTING
    {{return_param}} = ls_return.
IF ls_return IS NOT INITIAL.
  APPEND ls_return TO {{prefix}}_return.
ENDIF.

#### Evaluate the return messages

**Body:** LOOP AT {{prefix}}_return INTO ls_return.
  MESSAGE ID ls_return-id TYPE ls_return-type NUMBER ls_return-number
    WITH ls_return-message_v1 ls_return-message_v2
         ls_return-message_v3 ls_return-message_v4
    INTO DATA(lv_text).
  APPEND lv_text TO {{prefix}}_messages.
ENDLOOP.

DATA(lv_failed) = xsdbool(
  line_exists( {{prefix}}_return[ type = 'E' ] ) OR
  line_exists( {{prefix}}_return[ type = 'A' ] ) ).

#### Commit or roll back

**Body:** IF lv_failed = abap_true.
  CALL FUNCTION 'BAPI_TRANSACTION_ROLLBACK'.
ELSE.
  CALL FUNCTION 'BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT'
    EXPORTING
      wait = {{wait}}.
ENDIF.

**Notes:** Use only the call block that matches the signature of your BAPI; check it in SE37 under the Tables and Export tabs. Many BAPIs also need a matching X structure (for example headdatax) to flag the fields you want changed. BAPIs do not commit themselves, and BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT with WAIT set waits for the update task to finish. Never call COMMIT WORK directly inside a BAPI loop unless you understand the update behaviour.

## Content

**Intro:** Calling a BAPI is easy, calling it safely is where most bugs hide. The call can return errors in BAPIRET2 without raising an exception, nothing is saved until you commit, and a commit after an error can write half a document. This generator produces the full pattern: call, read the return messages, then commit or roll back.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the generator

**Body:** Enter the BAPI name, the first importing parameter and the variable you pass to it, and the name of the return parameter. Choose whether the return parameter is a TABLES parameter or an EXPORTING structure, as shown in SE37. Copy the declarations, the matching call block, the evaluation and the commit block into your program, then add the remaining parameters of your BAPI. Test in a development client with a document you can delete.

#### How BAPI return messages work

**Body:** BAPIRET2 carries a message type in TYPE: S for success, I for information, W for warning, E for error and A for abort. A BAPI that fails usually returns at least one E or A line and leaves the database unchanged within its own logic, but the surrounding LUW is yours to manage. The generator builds readable text with MESSAGE ... INTO, so the message class texts and variable substitution work the same way as on screen.

#### Commit, wait and rollback

**Body:** BAPIs do not commit, so you call BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT when the whole unit of work succeeded and BAPI_TRANSACTION_ROLLBACK when it did not. The WAIT parameter makes the program wait until the update task has finished, so a following BAPI call can see the new data, for example a goods receipt right after creating the order. Use WAIT only where you need the result immediately, because it costs time in loops.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Typical errors include checking only the first return line, ignoring warnings that explain a rejected field, committing despite an error, and forgetting the X structure that tells the BAPI which fields to update. Another is calling many BAPIs in a loop with a commit per call and no rollback strategy. Decide per business case whether one failure should roll back the whole batch, and log every return table for support.

**Cta:** If you are building integrations that write into SAP, Netray can discuss how an AI agent could prepare BAPI payloads for human approval, with every write going through your own controls.

**Faq:**

#### Why must I call BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT?

**Answer:** BAPIs are written not to commit on their own so that you can combine several calls into one logical unit of work. Until you call BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT, or a COMMIT WORK, the changes are not saved to the database.

#### What does the WAIT parameter do?

**Answer:** With WAIT set, the commit runs like COMMIT WORK AND WAIT and the program continues only after the update task has finished. This matters when the next step reads the data just created. Without it, the update may still be running.

#### How do I find which return parameter style a BAPI uses?

**Answer:** Open the function module in SE37 and look at the Export, Import and Tables tabs. Newer BAPIs often return a RETURN table in Tables, older ones return a single RETURN structure. The generator offers both patterns so you can pick the right one.

#### Should warnings stop the commit?

**Answer:** Not by default. Warnings (type W) are informational and the document is usually still created. Many teams still log them, and some treat specific warnings as errors by testing the message class and number. Decide per BAPI and document the rule.
