## Short answer

A technical specification skeleton for ABAP developers: repository objects, data access, error handling, performance and testing.

## Category

sap

## Erp

SAP ECC / S/4HANA

## Audience

- ABAP developer
- Technical architect
- Development lead

**Type:** text

**Default:** R. Developer

#### Package

**Key:** package

**Type:** text

**Default:** ZMM_REPORTING

#### Main object name

**Key:** prog

**Type:** text

**Default:** ZMM_OPEN_PO_AGING

#### Transaction code

**Key:** tcode

**Type:** text

**Default:** ZMM_POAGE

#### Data sources

**Key:** tables

**Type:** textarea

**Default:** EKKO, EKPO, EKET for PO header, item and schedule lines; LFA1 for vendor name; MAKT for material text. Open quantity from EKET-MENGE minus EKET-WEMNG.

#### Class and form design

**Key:** design

**Type:** textarea

**Default:** Local class LCL_AGING with methods GET_DATA, CALC_AGE and BUILD_FIELDCAT. Data selected in one JOIN on EKKO, EKPO and EKET, vendor and material text read with FOR ALL ENTRIES after checking the table is not empty.

#### Error handling

**Key:** errors

**Type:** textarea

**Default:** No data found: message type S with display of empty list. Missing vendor master: show vendor number and blank name. Authorization failure: message type E on selection screen.

#### Performance considerations

**Key:** perf

**Type:** textarea

**Default:** Plant is mandatory to use the table index. No SELECT inside loops. Result limited by document date range. Sorted internal tables with binary search for lookups.

**Blocks:**

#### Technical Specification {{ts_id}}

**Body:** Title: {{title}}
Functional spec: {{fs_ref}}
Developer: {{developer}}
Package: {{package}}

**Columns:**

- Object type
- Name
- Description
- Transport

**Rows:**

**0:** Program

**1:** {{prog}}

**2:** Main report

**0:** Transaction

#### Review

**Signatures:**

- Developer
- Peer reviewer
- Development lead

**Notes:** Replace the example names with your own namespace and naming convention (customer objects normally start with Z or Y). Verify table names against your release; in S/4HANA some tables are replaced by compatibility views.

## Content

**Intro:** The technical design document explains how an ABAP object will be built, which makes it reviewable before any code is written. It is also what the next developer reads when the object breaks in two years.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Start from the approved functional spec and copy its ID into the reference field. List the data sources with the exact tables or CDS views, then describe the program structure: local classes, function modules, forms or global classes. Fill in error handling and performance before coding. Add every repository object in the objects table and record the transport request once created. Hand the exported document to a peer for review before the first line is written.

**Bullets:**

- Link TS to FS for traceability
- List every repository object
- Plan unit tests in the same document
- Record the transport request number

#### Why design first

**Body:** Design review catches problems that are expensive in code: a SELECT inside a loop, a missing index field in the WHERE clause, a hard-coded plant or a missing authority check. A one-page technical design is faster to correct than a finished program. It also forces the developer to confirm that the data the functional spec asks for really exists in the system and in the expected release.

#### What to avoid

**Body:** Do not paste entire source code into the document, it becomes stale at once. Describe intent and interfaces instead. Do not skip the performance section for reports and interfaces: volume assumptions drive the choice between a join, FOR ALL ENTRIES, a CDS view or a background job. Do not leave the objects table empty, since that table is how support finds your work later.

**Bullets:**

- Stale pasted code
- No volume assumption
- Hard-coded values with no config table
- Unnamed message class

**Cta:** Technical design reviews are a good use of AI assistance when the model runs on your own infrastructure. We can discuss how that could work for your ABAP team.

**Faq:**

#### What is the difference between a functional and a technical specification?

**Answer:** The functional spec says what the business needs and how it should behave. The technical spec says how the developer will build it: objects, data access, classes, error handling and testing. One functional spec can lead to several technical specs.

#### Should the technical spec contain code?

**Answer:** Only short fragments where the logic is unusual. Full code goes stale as soon as it changes. Describe structure, interfaces and decisions, and keep the source in the system where it is versioned by transport.

#### Does this work for S/4HANA custom code?

**Answer:** Yes. Add the data sources as CDS views or released APIs where possible, and note whether the object follows clean core guidance. Verify table names against your release because the data model changed in S/4HANA.

#### Who reviews the technical spec?

**Answer:** A peer ABAP developer or the development lead. Review before coding, check performance, authorization, naming and reuse of existing objects. Sign-off lines are included at the bottom of the export.
