## Content

**Intro:** Neutralizing an acid tank or waste stream starts with equivalents, not litres. This calculator converts volume and acid normality into the mass of base to charge, adjusts for purity and safety excess, and warns you how much the liquid will heat.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the volume and the acid strength in equivalents per litre. Pick the base from the list, which supplies its equivalent weight. Enter the purity from the certificate of analysis and an excess percentage if you aim for a pH above neutral. The result is the reagent mass to charge and the approximate temperature rise, which tells you whether to add the base in stages or through a cooled loop.

#### The method

**Body:** Neutralization is stoichiometric on equivalents: equivalents of acid equal equivalents of base. Mass of base equals equivalents times equivalent weight. For a strong acid and strong base, about 57 kJ is released per equivalent, so a stream that contains many equivalents heats noticeably even when dilute.

**Bullets:**

- Eq = volume (L) x normality (eq/L)
- Base kg = Eq x equivalent weight / 1000
- Charge = base kg / purity x (1 + excess)
- Temperature rise = heat / (mass x 4.18) for aqueous streams

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Mixing up molarity and normality is the classic error. Sulfuric acid at 1 M carries two equivalents per litre. Also remember that weak acids such as acetic acid are only partly dissociated, yet they consume the same total equivalents when taken to the endpoint. Finally, lime slurry and carbonate generate solids or CO2 gas, so the vessel must be vented.

**Bullets:**

- Check the pH probe calibration before relying on it
- Add base slowly, never the other way round with concentrated acid
- Sodium carbonate releases carbon dioxide and can foam
- Record the dose in the batch record for waste traceability

**Cta:** If you track neutralization reagent usage and waste batches in your ERP, Netray can help connect those records for reporting. Ask us about it.

**Faq:**

#### How do I get acid normality?

**Answer:** Multiply molarity by the number of acidic hydrogens. Hydrochloric and nitric acid are 1 per mole, sulfuric acid is 2, phosphoric acid up to 3 depending on endpoint. Or use the result of a lab titration directly.

#### Why is the excess slider there?

**Answer:** Operators often target a slightly alkaline final pH, for example 8 to 9, to meet a discharge limit. The excess percentage adds extra base. Check the actual permit requirement and verify by titration.

#### Is the temperature rise reliable?

**Answer:** It is an upper estimate for a well-mixed aqueous stream with no cooling and no heat of dilution. Real rise is lower with cooling and thermal mass of the vessel, and higher if concentrated reagents are used.

#### Can I use it for solid caustic and 50 percent solution?

**Answer:** This tool outputs the mass of pure-basis reagent, adjusted by purity. For a 50 percent solution, enter 50 as the purity so the charge becomes the mass of solution to add.
