## Content

**Intro:** In many African markets the exchange rate moves faster than purchase prices can be renegotiated. This what-if shows how much more an imported part costs in local currency when the currency depreciates, including the duty that is charged on the higher CIF value.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the foreign price, quantity and today's exchange rate in units of local currency per dollar. Move the depreciation slider to see the new landed cost. The currency field is blank on purpose so the tool works for naira, cedi, kwacha, birr, shilling or any other currency.

**Bullets:**

- Use your real freight and insurance percentage from the last shipment
- Set VAT to zero if you recover it fully and want a net cost view
- Check which rate your customs authority uses for valuation

#### The formula

**Body:** CIF in local currency equals FOB times (1 plus freight percentage) times the exchange rate. Duty and clearing charges are percentages of that CIF, so a weaker currency raises them too. Landed cost equals CIF plus duty plus clearing. Import VAT is not part of cost for a registered manufacturer who can recover it, which is why the tool excludes it from the landed total.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** Cost per unit rises one for one with the exchange rate when every charge is a percentage of CIF. A 20% depreciation lifts the landed cost by 20%. If you hold finished goods priced in local currency, compare this increase with your price rise to see the margin squeeze, and use the chart to choose a hedge or pre-buy trigger.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Finance teams often update the exchange rate but leave fixed local charges unchanged, or forget that duty is assessed on the customs rate and not the bank rate. In the ERP, cost the purchase order at the expected receipt date rate and let the landed cost allocation post variances.

**Cta:** If you want ERP purchase orders revalued automatically against a rate scenario, we can prototype a read-only simulation over your open PO data.

**Faq:**

#### Does the tool work for any currency?

**Answer:** Yes. Enter the exchange rate as units of your local currency per one US dollar and read the results in the same units. The currency symbol is blank so it does not mislead.

#### Why is import VAT excluded from landed cost?

**Answer:** A VAT-registered manufacturer usually recovers import VAT as input tax, so it is a cash flow item and not a product cost. If you cannot recover it, add it into the duty percentage or raise the clearing percentage.

#### Which exchange rate do customs use?

**Answer:** Customs authorities often publish their own valuation rate, which can differ from the bank or parallel rate. Use the customs rate for duty and the bank rate for payment to the supplier when you need a precise figure.

#### Can I model a rate band instead of one value?

**Answer:** Run the calculator with several depreciation values and compare the results, or read the chart, which sweeps the whole range. For formal scenarios, export to Excel and keep the table alongside your budget.
