## Content

**Intro:** This calculator applies the straight pipe pressure design equation used in ASME B31.3 for process piping. It adds corrosion allowance and the mill under-tolerance so you get the nominal wall to order, not just the theoretical minimum.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the design pressure and the pipe outside diameter, then the allowable stress S for your material at the design temperature. Choose the longitudinal weld quality factor E and the coefficient Y. Set your corrosion allowance and the mill under-tolerance of the pipe specification. The primary result is the nominal wall you must order so that, after the mill takes its allowed tolerance off, the wall still meets the minimum required thickness. Compare the result with the schedule table for your NPS and choose the next heavier schedule.

#### The equation behind it

**Body:** The pressure design thickness for internal pressure is t = P x D / (2 x (S x E x W + P x Y)), valid when t is less than D/6 and no fatigue or unusual stress applies. Minimum required thickness tm adds mechanical, corrosion and erosion allowances. Because pipe is purchased with a manufacturing tolerance, the order thickness is tm divided by (1 minus the tolerance). For seamless carbon steel pipe the common value is 12.5 percent.

**Bullets:**

- S is the allowable stress at design temperature, not at ambient.
- E is the quality factor from the longitudinal weld type.
- Y changes with material and temperature range.
- W is the weld strength reduction factor, usually 1 for carbon steel in normal service.

#### Worked example

**Body:** For NPS 8 (219.1 mm OD) carbon steel at 4 MPa with S of 138 MPa, E of 1, W of 1 and Y of 0.4, t is about 3.14 mm. With a 3 mm corrosion allowance the minimum required thickness is 6.14 mm. Dividing by 0.875 for the 12.5 percent mill tolerance gives about 7.02 mm. The NPS 8 schedule 40 wall of 8.18 mm covers it, while schedule 20 at 6.35 mm does not.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The most common error is using the ambient allowable stress instead of the stress at the design temperature, which makes the pipe too thin at hot service. Others are forgetting the mill tolerance, mixing bar and MPa, and applying this straight-pipe equation to bends, tees or reducers, which need their own checks. In the ERP, keep the ordered wall, heat number and test class on the purchase order line so receiving inspection can verify it against the MTR.

**Cta:** If your engineering and purchasing data sit in the ERP, we can help you wire this check into item master and PO creation so the wall to order is validated before it is bought.

**Faq:**

#### Does this replace the full B31.3 design check?

**Answer:** No. It covers the straight pipe pressure thickness equation only. Bends, miters, branches, flexibility, occasional loads and fatigue need separate checks in the code. Use this for sizing and quoting, then confirm with a piping engineer.

#### Which pressure should I enter?

**Answer:** Enter the design pressure at the most severe coincident condition of pressure and temperature, in MPa gauge. Do not use operating pressure unless it equals the design condition. Convert bar by dividing by 10, and psi by dividing by 145.04.

#### Why does mill tolerance matter?

**Answer:** Pipe to ASTM A106 or API 5L may be delivered up to 12.5 percent below nominal wall. If you size only to the theoretical minimum, a legally acceptable pipe could end up thinner than the design requires.

#### What if t is more than D/6?

**Answer:** Then the thin wall equation is not strictly valid and the code requires special consideration of theory of failure, fatigue and thermal stress. The calculator flags this in the validity output.
