#### 1. Purpose and scope

**Body:** This policy sets how {{site}} plans, stocks and controls inventory held in {{erp}}. It applies to raw material, components, purchased finished goods and spares.

#### 2. Service targets

**Table:**

**Columns:**

- Class
- Target service level
- Basis

**Rows:**

#### 4. Excess and obsolete stock

**Body:** Stock with no demand for the period defined by management is reviewed for disposition: use, return, rework, sell, or write down. Reserves are agreed with Finance.

#### 5. Inventory accuracy and adjustments

**Body:** Cycle counts are performed according to the count schedule. Adjustments above {{adj_limit}} require documented approval before posting.

#### 6. Roles

## Content

**Intro:** Plants run better when the rules for stocking are written down once. This template gives you a short inventory planning policy covering service targets, parameter reviews, adjustment limits and roles.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the template

**Body:** Fill in the company details, the service targets by ABC class, the review cycle and the adjustment limit. Export to Word to add sections specific to your business, such as consignment stock or customer-owned material. Circulate to planning, purchasing, operations and finance for agreement, then publish it in your document control system with a revision number.

#### What a good policy settles

**Body:** A policy removes repeated arguments. It says who may change safety stock, how often parameters are reviewed, what happens to stock that has not moved, and when an adjustment needs a signature. Service targets tied to ABC class mean the plant buys protection where it matters and not for every part equally.

**Bullets:**

- Service targets by class, not one number for all
- A fixed parameter review cycle
- Named owners for excess, accuracy and adjustments

#### Connecting it to the ERP

**Body:** A policy should map to ERP fields. Service targets become service level inputs to your safety stock method; the review cycle matches a scheduled report on MRP parameters; adjustment limits match workflow approvals on inventory postings. If a rule cannot be enforced or reported on in the system, rewrite it so it can.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Policies that are too long are never read. Targets copied from a textbook that nobody agreed to are ignored. A policy without a review date goes stale. Keep it to two or three pages, agree the numbers with finance, and revisit it each year.

**Cta:** If you want the policy checked against how your ERP actually plans, we can compare the two and suggest changes. Ask for a review.

**Faq:**

#### Is this suitable for ISO 9001 or AS9100?

**Answer:** It can support the control of purchased material and inventory records, but certification requirements are set by your auditor and your own quality manual. Use the template as a draft and align it with your document control.

#### How long should the policy be?

**Answer:** Two to three pages is enough. Put detail in work instructions linked from the policy so the policy itself stays readable and stable.

#### What service targets are reasonable?

**Answer:** It depends on the business and the cost of holding stock. The example figures are illustrative. Agree real targets with sales and finance, using the cost of a stockout and the cost of carrying stock.

#### Who owns the policy?

**Answer:** Usually the supply chain or materials manager, with approval from operations and finance. Ownership should be a role, not a person, so it survives staff changes.
