## Content

**Intro:** Before you create a depreciation book or run Calculate Depreciation in Business Central, it helps to know what number to expect. This calculator shows straight-line and declining-balance results side by side for any year of an asset's life.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the acquisition cost, expected salvage value and useful life, then choose the year you want to inspect. For declining balance, enter the percentage rate you plan to use on the depreciation book. The outputs show the year-end book value and accumulated depreciation under each method, and the chart plots both across ten years.

#### The formulas

**Body:** Straight-line depreciation is cost minus salvage, divided by life, charged equally each year until the asset reaches salvage. Declining balance multiplies the opening book value by the rate, so charges are largest early and shrink every year. Book value at year n equals cost times one minus rate, to the power n. Declining balance in this model does not stop at salvage; in BC you control the end through the book's ending date.

**Bullets:**

- Straight-line: BC method Straight-Line
- Declining balance: Declining-Balance 1 and 2 methods, with a percentage you define
- User-defined and Table methods exist for custom curves
- Book value = acquisition cost + depreciation (posted as negative)

#### Reading the result

**Body:** Declining balance front-loads the expense, which suits assets that lose value quickly or tax regimes that allow accelerated write-offs. Straight-line is simpler and predictable. If the two lines cross, that is where straight-line depreciation would start to exceed declining balance, and where many policies switch methods. BC does not switch automatically.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Setting the depreciation starting date after the posting date of the acquisition, mixing book and tax depreciation in one book instead of using separate depreciation books, and forgetting that a mid-year start produces a partial first year. Check the Fixed Asset G/L Journal preview before you post the first run.

**Cta:** If you are migrating fixed assets from NAV, AX or another ERP and need the register to tie out, we can help validate opening book values and depreciation start dates.

**Faq:**

#### Does this match what BC will post?

**Answer:** It matches the annual shape, not the exact daily figures. BC uses a 360 or 365 day basis depending on settings, and partial first years change the first charge. Use this to plan, then confirm in a journal preview.

#### Can I use it for tax depreciation?

**Answer:** Only as a rough check. Tax methods vary by country, with prescribed rates and conventions. In BC, keep tax depreciation in a separate depreciation book so it does not affect the financial books.

#### What if salvage value is zero?

**Answer:** Set it to zero. Straight-line then writes the asset down to nothing over its life, and declining balance never reaches zero, so many policies set an ending date or a switch.

#### Why does declining balance never reach salvage?

**Answer:** Because each year takes a percentage of a shrinking balance. Choose an ending date on the depreciation book, or use another method for the final years.
