**Notes:** A generic starting point. Align test points, limits and environment with the manufacturer's data and any applicable standard for your instrument. Have the procedure reviewed by a competent metrologist before release.

## Content

**Intro:** Internal calibration needs a written, controlled procedure for each instrument type. This template gives you the structure so technicians calibrate the same way each time and auditors can see a clear method.

**Sections:**

#### What a good procedure contains

**Body:** A calibration procedure states the scope, the reference standards and their traceability, the environment, the preparation steps, the test points, the acceptance limits and how results are recorded. It should be specific enough that two technicians would get the same result. Reference the manufacturer's specification or a recognized method for the limits.

**Bullets:**

- Name the standards and require valid certificates
- Control temperature and soak time for dimensional work
- Record as-found data before any adjustment

#### Choosing test points and limits

**Body:** Spread test points across the range, using non-round values so the gage is not checked only at its zero and cardinal points. Set the permissible error from the manufacturer's accuracy statement or from a fraction of the tolerance of the features it measures. A common practice is to keep the standards' uncertainty to a quarter or less of the permissible error.

#### Document control

**Body:** Treat the procedure as a controlled document with numbering, revision and approvals. Train technicians and keep competence records. When the procedure changes, record the reason and effective date. If you outsource calibration, you can use a similar template to define your requirements to the lab.

**Cta:** Netray can help link calibration procedures and results to equipment records in your ERP, with data staying on your side.

**Faq:**

#### Do I need ISO 17025 to calibrate in-house?

**Answer:** Not necessarily. Many manufacturers calibrate in-house under ISO 9001 or AS9100 using traceable standards and documented procedures. Accreditation is a separate step some labs choose or customers require.

#### How many test points are enough?

**Answer:** It depends on the instrument. Micrometers and calipers are often checked at around ten points across range, while simpler fixed gages may need fewer. Follow the manufacturer's guidance or a recognized standard.

#### What about measurement uncertainty?

**Answer:** Competent calibration considers the uncertainty of the reference standards and the process. Document how you ensured it is small compared to the permissible error of the instrument.

#### Can I use this for electrical instruments?

**Answer:** Edit the environment, standards and test points for your equipment. The structure carries over, but electrical calibration usually needs specialized standards and expertise.
