#### Annual volume

**Key:** volume

**Type:** number

**Default:** 50000

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 1000

**Unit:** units

**Outputs:**

#### CNY/USD move (positive = RMB weaker)

**Key:** move

**Expr:** (current_rate / base_rate - 1) * 100

#### Move beyond band

**Key:** excess

**Expr:** if(gt(abs(move), band), (abs(move) - band) * if(gt(move, 0), 1, -1), 0)

#### Price change

**Key:** chg

**Expr:** -1 * excess * cny_share / 100 * share_buyer / 100

**Format:** currency

**Primary:** true

#### Annual cost impact to buyer

## Content

**Intro:** A USD-priced contract with a Chinese factory leaves the supplier exposed to a rising RMB, because most of its costs are in yuan. A band and sharing clause stops either side from absorbing a large currency swing. This calculator shows what that clause costs or saves.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the USD base price and the CNY per USD rate fixed in the contract. Set the current rate, the neutral band, the share of the supplier's cost that is in CNY, and the share of the excess move that changes the price. The tool computes the percentage move, the part beyond the band, the price change and the annual impact on the buyer. The chart sweeps the exchange rate so you can see where the adjusted price sits at several rates.

#### The model

**Body:** The percentage move is current rate divided by base rate minus one. Only the part beyond the neutral band counts. That excess is multiplied by the share of cost incurred in CNY, because only that portion creates an exposure, and by the sharing share, then applied with the opposite sign to the USD price. If the RMB weakens, the supplier benefits, and the price drops. If it strengthens, the price rises.

**Bullets:**

- Move = current / base - 1
- Excess = move beyond the band
- Price change = - excess x CNY cost share x sharing share
- Check the rate source named in the contract, such as the PBOC central parity

#### Worked example and common mistakes

**Body:** With a base of 7.10 and a current rate of 7.30, the RMB is about 2.8 percent weaker. After a 2 percent band, 0.82 percent is shared. With 85 percent of cost in CNY and a 50 percent share, the price moves down about 0.35 percent, from 8.00 to 7.97. Mistakes include using the wrong quote direction, forgetting that CNH and onshore CNY can differ, applying the clause to the whole price when some inputs are USD-denominated, and not agreeing on a fixing date.

**Cta:** If your POs are in multiple currencies, Netray can build a read-only report that shows FX exposure by supplier and contract from your ERP. We can run it on your own infrastructure.

**Faq:**

#### Why share the move instead of fixing the price?

**Answer:** A fixed USD price pushes all currency risk onto one party. Sharing beyond a band keeps prices stable in normal times and prevents a large move from threatening supply or margin.

#### Should the clause be symmetric?

**Answer:** Usually yes. A clause that protects the supplier from a stronger RMB but gives the buyer nothing when the RMB weakens is hard to defend. The band and sharing split should apply both ways.

#### Which rate should be the reference?

**Answer:** Name a public source and a time, for example the PBOC central parity rate on the first business day of the month. Using an unspecified bank quote creates disputes.

#### How is this different from hedging?

**Answer:** A clause shares risk between buyer and supplier in the price. Hedging uses forwards or options with a bank. Many buyers use both for large, long contracts.
