**Notes:** This is a general shop-floor record, not an AS9102 form. For aerospace first article inspection use the structure your customer requires. Gauges must be in calibration.

## Content

**Intro:** First piece inspection stops a bad setup from turning into a lot of scrap. This record documents what was measured, with what, and who released the machine to run, which is what auditors and customers ask to see.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the record

**Body:** Machine the first piece, then list each print characteristic you are verifying, with nominal, tolerance and the gauge used. Fill in actual values and mark pass or fail. If anything fails, record the adjustment you made and measure again before approving. Choose an overall result, add comments and sign. Export to PDF to attach to the traveler or to Excel if you want to trend results. The table is intentionally blank for you to complete at the bench or after export.

#### What to measure on the first piece

**Body:** You rarely need every dimension on the print, but you should cover the features most likely to move with setup and tool offsets.

**Bullets:**

- Critical and key characteristics called out on the print or control plan
- Features set by offsets: depths, bore sizes, lengths and positions relative to part zero
- Features from each tool that cuts a tolerance, since each has its own offset
- Surface finish and thread fit where specified, with the right gauge
- Any feature on a later operation that depends on this one as a datum

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** A first piece check is only as good as the gauge. Using a caliper for a feature that needs a bore gauge or CMM invites false approvals. Another miss is measuring a warm part straight off the machine, which reads large for most metals. Finally, do not skip a recheck after an offset adjustment: the second piece proves the correction worked. Keep the signed record with the job, not on the machine.

**Cta:** If your inspection results should land in the ERP or QMS automatically, Netray can scope an integration. The template works standalone without it.

**Faq:**

#### Is this the same as an AS9102 first article report?

**Answer:** No. AS9102 has a specific three-form structure for aerospace. This is a simpler shop-floor first piece record. If your customer requires AS9102, use that format instead.

#### How many characteristics should I list?

**Answer:** At minimum, the critical and key characteristics plus features driven by offsets and setup. Your control plan or customer requirement may set a longer list.

#### Who should sign the record?

**Answer:** Typically the machinist who made the part, the inspector who measured it, and a supervisor or quality lead who releases the lot. Follow your own quality system's roles.

#### Does the record need to be kept?

**Answer:** Most quality systems retain it with the job. Retention periods come from your customer and your own procedure, so check them rather than assuming a fixed number of years.
