## Content

**Intro:** A lathe setup sheet is the record that lets a second operator, or the same operator next month, repeat a job without guessing. This template captures workholding, stickout, tool stations and first-piece checks in one printable page.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the setup sheet

**Body:** Fill the header fields, choose the workholding, and describe the zero point and stickout in words a new operator can follow. Then print or export to PDF and complete the tool list and first-piece tables by hand at the machine. Save the finished sheet against the part number and revision so the next run starts from proven settings rather than from the program alone.

**Bullets:**

- Record the zero point relative to a physical face
- Write clamp pressure for soft jaws and thin walls
- Note tailstock force when used
- List every turret station, even spares

#### What a good sheet contains

**Body:** The program name is not enough. Operators lose time rebuilding things that never made it onto paper: bore diameter of the soft jaws, which side of the chuck the part faces, how far the bar feeds, and which inserts are approved. The tool list should name the holder, insert grade and nose radius, because a wrong nose radius changes surface finish and the size of the finished profile. Offsets belong on the sheet as starting values, not as a replacement for measuring.

#### First-piece checks

**Body:** Measure the features that the drawing marks as critical, plus length and the first thread or bore. Write actual readings, not just a tick. Readings let you see drift from run to run and give the inspector a basis for approval. If a dimension is near a limit, note which offset you adjusted and by how much so the correction is repeatable.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Sheets go stale when programs change but the sheet does not. Tie the sheet to a program revision. Avoid writing offsets as final values; wear and thermal growth move them. Do not leave the stickout field blank, because it is the number most often wrong when a setup is rebuilt. Finally, keep one sheet per operation, not one per part, since turning and second-op chucking differ.

**Cta:** If your routings and tooling live in an ERP, Netray can help surface the right program and tool list at each operation so setup sheets are generated from current data.

**Faq:**

#### Should the setup sheet replace the CNC program comments?

**Answer:** No. Program comments help the programmer, while the setup sheet covers things the program cannot say: jaw bores, clamp pressure, stickout and inspection plan. Use both, and keep the program number on the sheet so they stay linked.

#### How often should a setup sheet be revised?

**Answer:** Whenever the program, workholding, tooling or drawing revision changes. A simple rule is to revise the sheet at the same time the program revision letter changes, and to retire the old copy so nobody runs from it.

#### Can I use this for a Swiss-type lathe?

**Answer:** Yes for the header, material, tool list and checks, but Swiss machines also need guide bushing, bar stock tolerance and sub-spindle details. Add those to the notes field or the setup notes block.

#### Does it store my data?

**Answer:** The template runs in your browser and exports the finished document. Nothing needs to be sent to anyone to use it, and you can print it straight from the exported PDF.
