## Content

**Intro:** Expedite fees are easy to see on a purchase order, while a stopped line is spread across labor, missed shipments and contract penalties. This calculator puts them on the same page so a buyer can justify, or reject, an expensive rescue.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the expected days of shortage and the lines affected. Add output per line per day and the contribution margin per unit, then the share of output you could recover later with overtime. Enter idle labor and overhead per line per day, and any contractual late penalty with its grace period. Finally enter the expedite cost and the number of days it removes. The calculator compares the cost of waiting with the cost of expediting.

#### The method

**Body:** Unrecovered contribution equals shortage days times lines times units per day times margin, times the share not recovered. Idle cost is days times lines times the daily labor and overhead figure. Penalties apply only after the grace period. The expedite case adds the expedite cost to a shorter shortage using the same formulas. Net benefit is the cost of waiting minus the cost with expediting.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A positive net benefit supports the expedite. The chart shows both curves, and their gap widens quickly once late penalties start. If the net benefit is negative, accept the delay and use the time to re-plan. Do not ignore the second order effects the model leaves out, such as customer goodwill or the risk of rushing a counterfeit-prone source.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Counting full revenue instead of contribution margin overstates the loss. Counting idle labor when staff can be redeployed to other work does the same. The opposite mistake is assuming all lost output can be recovered, which fails when capacity is already tight. Finally, check whether the expedited part is genuinely available on the promised date, or the benefit is only theoretical.

**Cta:** Netray can help your ERP flag likely shortages from open orders and supplier lead times early enough that fewer of them reach the expedite stage.

**Faq:**

#### What margin should I use?

**Answer:** Use contribution margin per unit: selling price less variable costs. Fixed overhead is already counted in the idle cost input, so including it in the margin as well would double count.

#### How do I treat partial line stoppages?

**Answer:** Reduce the units per day to the volume actually lost, or the days to the equivalent full-line days. The calculator does not need a separate input for that.

#### Can overtime recovery be 100 percent?

**Answer:** Only when you have spare capacity and the schedule allows it. If lines run near their limit, use a much lower value, because the lost output will not come back.

#### Does this include the cost of the part?

**Answer:** It includes only the expedite premium. If you would have bought the part anyway, enter just the additional cost over the normal price.
