## Content

**Intro:** On corrugated work, board is usually the largest cost in the box, and trim waste silently raises it. This worksheet shows how many blanks fit on each sheet, the waste left over and the board cost per box for each order.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the worksheet

**Body:** Enter the blank size from your design, the sheet size you can buy or run, the board price per square metre and the quantity required. The sheet computes blanks per sheet, trim waste, board cost per box and sheets needed. Try changing the sheet width in a row and watch the waste change; that is how planners pick the best trim.

#### The method

**Body:** Blanks per sheet equals the number that fit along the length times the number that fit across the width, each rounded down. Trim waste equals one minus blanks times blank area divided by sheet area. Board cost per box is sheet area times price per m2 divided by blanks per sheet. Sheets needed is quantity divided by blanks per sheet, rounded up.

**Bullets:**

- Rotate the blank by swapping length and width to test a better fit
- Add a spoilage allowance to the quantity for setup and rejects
- Cost uses board only, not printing, die cutting or freight

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The most common errors are mixing flute direction with sheet direction, which matters for box compression because flutes should run vertically, and forgetting that a sheet wider than the corrugator's trim width cannot run. Also remember that small differences in blank size, even 10 mm, can drop one up and double the waste.

**Cta:** If your estimators rebuild this layout in Excel for every quote, we can help connect board grades, prices and sizes to your ERP costing.

**Faq:**

#### What is a typical trim waste for corrugated boxes?

**Answer:** It varies with box size and available sheet widths. Many plants aim for single digit percent on the corrugator by selecting deckle widths well. Small or odd blanks can exceed that, so compare options per order.

#### Does this account for flute direction?

**Answer:** No. You must decide which blank dimension runs with the flutes and enter it accordingly. For most boxes the flutes run along the box height, so check that your length and width assignment honours that.

#### Why does the cost per box differ from my quote?

**Answer:** This is board material cost only. Quotes usually add conversion, printing, tooling, waste allowances, freight and margin. Use this value as the material line in your own quote.

#### Can I use it for folding cartons?

**Answer:** Yes for simple grid layouts. For folding cartons, nesting and tuck-in layouts can fit more than a grid, so treat the result as a conservative estimate.
