## Content

**Intro:** On a cost-plus-incentive-fee contract the fee moves with cost performance. This calculator applies the share ratio to the difference between target and actual cost and holds the result between the minimum and maximum fee.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the negotiated target cost, target fee percent, the contractor's share of cost variance and the minimum and maximum fee percentages. Then enter an actual allowable cost to see the fee and total price. A share ratio of 80/20 means the government carries 80 percent of any overrun or underrun and the contractor 20 percent, so enter 20. The chart sweeps actual cost to show where the fee reaches the floor or the ceiling, which marks the cost range where the incentive stops working.

#### The formula

**Body:** Fee equals target fee plus the contractor share times the difference between target cost and actual cost, bounded by the minimum and maximum fee. An underrun raises fee, an overrun lowers it. Below the minimum fee, the contractor still earns the floor, and above the maximum the fee stops increasing. Total price is allowable cost plus fee. Costs must be allowable, allocable and reasonable under the contract's cost principles, so the actual cost used is the audited allowable figure, not the raw ledger total.

**Bullets:**

- Point of total assumption is not modeled here
- Fee is not paid on unallowable cost
- Interim billing usually uses provisional fee rates

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Entering the government share instead of the contractor share inverts the result. Another is applying the ratio to total cost rather than to the variance from target. Programs also forget that scope changes reset the target cost, so compare actuals to the correct revised target. In your ERP, keep a project cost structure that separates allowable and unallowable cost so the figure feeding this calculation is correct at each billing and at final settlement.

**Cta:** If you need CPIF exposure reported from your ERP project ledger, we can build a private, read-only view that tracks cost against target.

**Faq:**

#### What does an 80/20 share ratio mean?

**Answer:** It usually means the government bears 80 percent and the contractor 20 percent of cost variance from target. In this calculator, you enter 20 as the contractor share. The convention is government first, contractor second.

#### Can the fee go below the minimum?

**Answer:** Not on the formula. The minimum fee acts as a floor and the maximum as a ceiling, so fee is clamped between them regardless of how far costs overrun or underrun, unless the contract states otherwise.

#### Is fee paid on unallowable cost?

**Answer:** No. Only allowable, allocable and reasonable costs count. Unallowable costs are excluded from the cost used in the fee computation, which is why the allowable figure matters rather than the raw spend.

#### What is the cost range where the incentive works?

**Answer:** Between the cost where the raw fee equals the minimum and where it equals the maximum. Outside that window, further savings or overruns change nothing in fee, so incentive behavior disappears.
