## Content

**Intro:** Marker efficiency tells you how well pieces are nested on paper. Fabric utilization tells you how much of the roll actually becomes cut parts. The gap between them is where cutting rooms lose money, and this calculator puts both numbers side by side.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Pull marker length, usable width and total pattern area from the CAD marker report. Enter the number of plies from the lay plan, the average end loss you leave on each ply, and the defect and splice loss from your inspection records. The calculator returns marker efficiency, the metres of fabric used, overall fabric utilization and the cost of the fabric that did not become garment parts.

#### Formulas

**Body:** Marker efficiency equals total pattern area divided by marker length times width. Fabric used equals plies times (marker length plus end loss), adjusted for defect loss. Utilization equals plies times pattern area divided by the area of fabric used. Because end loss and defects are excluded from marker efficiency, utilization is always lower than marker efficiency.

**Bullets:**

- Marker efficiency = pattern area / (length x width)
- Utilization = plies x pattern area / fabric area used
- Loss cost = fabric used x price x loss share

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A marker efficiency in the high 80s is common for woven garments with good nesting, and knit tubular work and prints behave differently, so compare against your own history for the same style family. If marker efficiency is healthy but utilization is low, look at end loss, short lays, splicing practice and remnant handling. If marker efficiency itself is low, the fix is in the marker: grain tolerance, size mix and pattern allowances.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Using label width instead of measured width inflates marker efficiency. Counting remnants that are never reused as usable fabric hides the loss. Comparing efficiency across styles without comparing fabric type, such as stripes against solids, leads to wrong conclusions about cutters or planners.

**Cta:** Netray can help surface lay and cut report data from your ERP or MES into one view of utilization by style and cutter, read-only.

**Faq:**

#### What is marker efficiency?

**Answer:** It is the percentage of the marker area covered by pattern pieces. A higher number means less fabric left between pieces. It is a planning metric and does not include end loss or defect loss on the table.

#### What is the difference from fabric utilization?

**Answer:** Utilization measures the share of the actual fabric consumed that becomes cut pieces, so it includes end loss, defects and splices. It is the more honest measure of what the cutting room actually delivers.

#### How can I improve marker efficiency?

**Answer:** Review size ratios, allow small grain tolerances where the buyer permits, use CAD auto-nesting with manual refinement, and combine sizes in one marker when the order mix supports it.

#### Where do I get pattern area?

**Answer:** Most CAD marker systems print total piece area or give marker efficiency directly in the marker report. Multiply the efficiency by marker area if only the percentage is shown.
