**Disclaimer:** Sign convention: positive means unfavorable (cost above standard). D365 posts variances by ledger account according to your inventory and costing setup, so verify against your own postings.

## Content

**Intro:** When a production order closes with a variance, the total hides the cause. This calculator splits it into material price, material usage, labor rate and labor efficiency, the same four buckets cost accountants use to trace the issue to purchasing, production or engineering.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter units produced, the standard quantities, prices and hours from the item and routing, and the actuals from the production order's picking list and route journals. Read each variance separately. A price variance points at purchasing or an outdated standard. Usage points at scrap, yield or BOM accuracy. Rate variance points at labor mix or overtime. Efficiency points at routing times, setup or downtime.

#### Formulas and sign convention

**Body:** Price variance uses actual quantity because that is what was bought at the different price. Usage variance uses standard price on the quantity difference. Labor follows the same pattern. All results are positive when unfavorable. The four parts add exactly to actual cost minus standard cost for the output, so you can reconcile them to the order total.

**Bullets:**

- Material price = (actual price - standard price) x actual qty
- Material usage = (actual qty - allowed qty) x standard price
- Labor rate = (actual rate - standard rate) x actual hours
- Labor efficiency = (actual hours - allowed hours) x standard rate

#### Worked example

**Body:** With the defaults, 500 units are produced and 1,050 units of material are allowed, but 1,120 were consumed at a price above standard. Both price and usage are unfavorable. Labor ran 66 hours against 60 allowed at a higher rate. The total is shown as a share of standard cost; a few percent is typical noise, while double digits deserve an investigation of the routing and BOM.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Do not compare actuals for a partial order against standard for the full order: use the quantity reported as finished. Be careful with co-products and by-products, which change allowed quantities. Also remember that in D365 the timing of cost adjustments and the inventory model can shift when a variance appears, so reconcile to the ledger after the order is ended, not while it is still in process.

**Cta:** If you want variances ranked and explained across all closed production orders from your D365 data, Netray can build a read-only analysis with your finance team.

**Faq:**

#### Why is price variance based on actual quantity?

**Answer:** Because the whole purchased quantity was acquired at the different price. Using standard quantity would ignore the price effect on the extra material, and the four components would no longer add to the total.

#### Is a favorable variance always good?

**Answer:** Not necessarily. Favorable usage could mean thin material, skipped operations or inaccurate reporting. Favorable efficiency could hide poor quality that shows up later as rework. Investigate surprises either way.

#### What about overhead variances?

**Answer:** This tool covers direct material and direct labor. Overhead spending, efficiency and volume variances need overhead rates and capacity assumptions, which depend on how your indirect costs are set up.

#### Can I use it outside D365?

**Answer:** Yes, the arithmetic is standard cost accounting. It works for any ERP that tracks standard and actual quantities and prices.
