## Content

**Intro:** This 2026 training matrix template is an editable skills and competence matrix for manufacturing plants. Score each employee from 0 to 4 against each work center or skill, see average competence and gaps instantly, set review dates and export to Excel as evidence for ISO 9001 or AS9100 audits.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the matrix

**Body:** Edit the column headings to match your work centers, processes and procedures, then replace the sample rows with your people. Score only what someone has been assessed on, not what they probably can do. Set a review date for each person, normally at least annually and after any change in role, procedure or equipment. The two computed columns show average competence and the number of skills below level 3, so supervisors can see at a glance where cover is thin.

**Bullets:**

- Use the same 0 to 4 scale for every skill
- Review the matrix when you plan shifts and holiday cover
- Keep sign-off evidence outside the matrix and reference it

#### ISO 9001 and AS9100 competence

**Body:** ISO 9001 clause 7.2 asks organisations to determine the competence needed, make sure people are competent on the basis of education, training or experience, take action to acquire it where needed, evaluate the effectiveness of that action and keep documented evidence. AS9100 builds on this for aerospace, including awareness of product conformity and safety. A skills matrix is a convenient summary, but auditors will look behind it for the actual training records, assessments and sign-offs.

#### Linking to ERP work centers

**Body:** Many ERPs let you restrict who can clock on to a work center or approve an operation, using employee skills, certifications or authorised-operator lists. Align the columns here with those work center codes so the matrix and the system agree. When someone moves from level 2 to 3, update both the matrix and the ERP record. A mismatch is a common audit finding in plants where the matrix is on paper and the system allows anyone to log time anywhere.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Matrices go stale when nobody owns them, when scores are inflated, or when there are too many skills to maintain. Start with critical processes: special processes, inspection, setup and anything with a customer or regulatory requirement. Track expiry for certifications such as welding, NDT or forklift licences on a separate list. Review gaps monthly with supervisors and use them to plan cross-training.

**Cta:** Netray can connect a private AI layer to your ERP and HR data on your own servers, so supervisors can ask which operators are qualified for a work center on tomorrow's schedule, with read-only access.

**Faq:**

#### What is a training matrix?

**Answer:** It is a grid of employees against skills, processes or courses, showing the level each person has reached. Plants use it to plan cross-training, assign work safely, and show auditors that people are competent for the tasks they perform.

#### What scale should we use in a skills matrix?

**Answer:** A simple 0 to 4 scale works well: none, in training, supervised, independent, and able to train others. What matters is that everyone defines the levels the same way and that a score reflects a documented assessment rather than a guess.

#### Does the matrix satisfy ISO 9001 or AS9100 on its own?

**Answer:** It is a useful summary, but the standards require documented evidence of competence such as training records, assessments and experience. Keep those in your HR or document system and make sure the matrix points to them. Auditors will typically sample individual records.

#### How often should the matrix be reviewed?

**Answer:** At least annually for each person, and whenever roles, equipment or procedures change. Many plants also review gaps monthly to plan cross-training. Set the next review date per person in the sheet so overdue reviews are easy to find.
