## Audience

- Production planner
- Materials manager
- Epicor administrator

## Tool

**Kind:** checklist

**Scoring Note:** Tick each item before you rely on MRP output. Any unticked critical item is a likely cause of wrong suggestions.

**Groups:**

#### Before the run: part and planning data

**Items:**

**Text:** Parts to plan have the planning flags set so MRP considers them

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Lead times (purchasing and manufacturing) are current for key parts

**Critical:** true

Safety stock and minimum quantities reviewed for top parts

Lot sizing and multiples reflect current supplier terms

**Text:** Approved supplier and price list data exists for purchased parts

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Bills of material revisions are approved and effective on the right dates

**Critical:** true

Obsolete or inactive parts are excluded or flagged

#### Before the run: demand and supply

**Items:**

**Text:** Sales orders and releases are entered and dated correctly

**Critical:** true

Forecasts are loaded and still valid

**Text:** Inventory counts are reasonable; major cycle count variances resolved

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Open purchase orders have accurate due dates

**Critical:** true

Open jobs have realistic start and due dates

**Text:** Firm jobs and held jobs reviewed so MRP does not plan around bad supply

**Critical:** true

Stale or cancelled demand cleared

#### Run setup

**Items:**

**Text:** Choose full regeneration or net change deliberately and know why

**Critical:** true

**Text:** Confirm the plant or site and scheduling horizon are correct

**Critical:** true

Confirm no other heavy processes or users are changing demand during the run

Run in a test environment first after major data or setup changes

Record who ran it and when

**Text:** Check the run completed without errors in the process log

**Critical:** true

#### After the run: review

**Items:**

**Text:** Review unfirm job suggestions against capacity before approval

**Critical:** true

Review purchase suggestions with buyers, grouped by supplier

**Text:** Check action messages for expedite, delay and cancel items

**Critical:** true

Investigate parts with a suggestion but no clear demand

**Text:** Investigate parts with demand but no suggestion

**Critical:** true

Check for suggestions with past due dates

Share exception list with planners and supervisors

Archive the run notes and any decisions

## Content

**Intro:** Most MRP complaints trace back to the inputs, not the engine. Wrong lead times, stale demand and ignored firm jobs produce suggestions nobody trusts. This checklist runs through the inputs, the run and the review.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the checklist

**Body:** Work from top to bottom before each run, or at least weekly for planners who run net change daily. Items marked critical are the common sources of misleading suggestions. Export the list and keep a copy per run so you can compare when a surprise shows up. If the checks pass and suggestions still look wrong, take a single part and trace demand and supply through its planning detail.

#### Why inputs matter more than settings

**Body:** MRP is arithmetic over your data. If a purchased part has a lead time of three days but the supplier needs three weeks, MRP will plan late every time. If inventory is overstated, it will never suggest buying. Time spent on lead times, counts and due dates pays back faster than tuning process options.

#### Regeneration or net change

**Body:** Net change processes only parts touched since the last run and is fast for daily use. Regeneration recalculates everything and is the safer choice after major data changes such as BOM revisions, lead time updates or migrations. Many sites run net change nightly and regeneration weekly or monthly. Whatever you choose, make it consistent.

#### Reviewing the output

**Body:** Treat suggestions as proposals. Check unfirm jobs against capacity, group purchase suggestions by supplier for buyers, and read action messages first because they highlight conflicts between supply and demand. Investigate parts with demand and no suggestion, which usually means a planning flag or a firm supply is hiding the need.

**Cta:** If planners spend hours exporting MRP output to Excel, we can build a read-only exception view over your Epicor data.

**Faq:**

#### Why is Epicor MRP not creating suggestions for a part?

**Answer:** Common causes are planning flags not set on the part, supply that already covers demand, a firm job treated as fixed supply, a demand date outside the horizon, or lead times that place the need after the planning window. Trace the single part through its planning detail.

#### Should I run regeneration or net change?

**Answer:** Use net change for day-to-day runs because it only handles parts that changed. Use regeneration after large data changes or when results look inconsistent. Many sites schedule both at different frequencies.

#### Do firm jobs change when MRP runs?

**Answer:** MRP treats firm jobs as fixed supply and does not reschedule them in the usual way. If you want suggestions to move them, unfirm the jobs first. Review the list of firm jobs regularly so they do not hide real shortages.

#### How often should MRP run?

**Answer:** It depends on how fast demand changes. Many manufacturers run net change nightly, and some run during the day for fast-moving operations. Choose a schedule planners can review in time to act, and avoid running during heavy transaction periods.
