## Content

**Intro:** An ERP implementation plan is the document that turns a signed contract into a sequence of phases, owners and exit criteria. This template builds a clean plan from a few fields so you can start the kickoff with something concrete.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the template

**Body:** Fill the fields at the top with your project name, sponsor, dates and rollout approach. List scope and out-of-scope items in plain sentences; the out-of-scope list prevents more disputes than any other line in the plan. Review the phase table, change owners and exit criteria to match your methodology, then export to PDF or Word. Circulate it to the steering committee before kickoff and treat the version you export as baseline version 1.0, with later changes going through change control.

#### The phases behind the plan

**Body:** Most ERP methodologies converge on the same shape even when they use different names: initiate, design, build, test, deploy and stabilise. SAP Activate calls them Discover, Prepare, Explore, Realize, Deploy and Run. Oracle and Microsoft use similar stage gates. The point of each gate is an exit criterion that someone other than the project manager can verify, such as design sign-off by process owners or zero open severity 1 and 2 defects.

**Bullets:**

- Every phase needs a named owner and a measurable exit criterion
- Testing should include system integration test and user acceptance test as separate gates
- Cutover and training belong in the plan from the start, not added in the final month
- Hypercare needs an end date and an exit rule

#### Choosing a rollout approach

**Body:** Big bang is simplest to govern but concentrates risk into one weekend. Phased by site lets one plant absorb the learning before the next, at the cost of running two states of the system and interfaces for longer. Phased by module reduces change load but often needs temporary integrations between old and new. A pilot site followed by waves is common in multi-plant manufacturers. Pick the approach before you set dates, because it changes the critical path and the number of cutovers you have to plan.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The usual failures are a plan with no named business owners, no key user time budgeted, and a go-live date set before the fit-gap is complete. Another is hiding data migration inside the build phase: it needs its own track with its own mock loads. Finally, plans often lack a decision date for the go/no-go; set it at least two weeks before the cutover so there is time to react.

**Cta:** If you want ERP data profiled or reports and queries drafted by AI before your design phase, we can review your plan and show where automation shortens the build and test tracks.

**Faq:**

#### How long does an ERP implementation take?

**Answer:** For a single-site discrete manufacturer on a modern cloud ERP, six to twelve months is a common range. Multi-site, heavily customised or regulated projects often run twelve to twenty-four months. Scope, data quality and key user availability drive the spread more than the product.

#### What is the difference between a project plan and a project charter?

**Answer:** A charter authorises the project and states objectives, sponsor, budget envelope and high-level scope. The plan details phases, deliverables, owners, milestones and governance. Many teams write the charter first and expand it into the plan after vendor mobilisation.

#### Should the plan include data migration and training?

**Answer:** Yes. Both are tracks with their own owners, dates and exit criteria. Treating them as subtasks of build or deployment is a common reason projects discover late that data loads or training are not ready.

#### Can I use this for any ERP?

**Answer:** Yes. The phases are product-neutral. Rename them to match your vendor methodology, for example Activate for SAP, and add product-specific tasks such as transport strategy or tenant setup.
