## Content

**Intro:** A migration business case needs a payback period and a value that accounts for time. This calculator gives both from a handful of inputs a finance lead can defend.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Put every one-time cost in the investment line, including internal time and consultants. For savings, subtract new run cost from current run cost, using the full cost of the old system as seen in the on-prem run-cost tool. Count productivity only when someone owns the benefit. Test the result at conservative and optimistic values.

#### The method

**Body:** Annual net benefit is the run-cost saving plus productivity gain. Payback is the ramp delay plus investment divided by monthly benefit. NPV uses the annuity factor, one minus the discount factor raised to the horizon, divided by the rate, multiplied by annual benefit, less benefit lost during ramp and the investment. With a zero rate the factor equals the years.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A positive NPV at your cost of capital means the project clears the hurdle. If payback exceeds the horizon, the case rests on strategic reasons such as supportability or security. A common mistake is counting avoided risk as a saving without probability weighting, which the cost-of-waiting calculator handles separately.

**Cta:** Netray can help validate the run-cost and benefit baseline with data from your ERP. The calculator needs no such input.

**Faq:**

#### What discount rate should I use?

**Answer:** Use your company's cost of capital or hurdle rate. If you do not have one, ask finance. Eight to twelve percent is common for mid-size manufacturers, but it is a company decision.

#### Why subtract the ramp loss?

**Answer:** Because savings do not start on day one. Dual running, training and stabilisation delay the benefits, and ignoring that overstates the case.

#### Can NPV be negative and still justify a move?

**Answer:** Yes, if staying carries unquantified risk or blocks growth. State that explicitly in the business case rather than hiding it in the numbers.

#### Does it handle varying yearly benefits?

**Answer:** No. It assumes level benefits. For uneven profiles, use a spreadsheet with a row per year and the same logic.
