**Intro:** A RACI matrix removes the argument over who decides and who does. For ERP projects, where business, IT and partner staff share work, a clear matrix is one of the cheapest governance tools available.

#### How to use the matrix

**Body:** Start with the pre-filled activities and add the ones specific to your project, such as interface build or tax localisation. Rename roles to match your organisation, and use the dropdowns to set each cell. Then check every row: it must have exactly one accountable role. Export to Excel and review the matrix with each named person in a short workshop, because a RACI that nobody has agreed to is not a RACI.

#### What R, A, C and I mean

**Body:** Responsible roles do the work. Accountable is the single person who owns the result and approves it. Consulted roles give input before a decision, and Informed roles are told after. In ERP projects the commonly misassigned item is accountability for business data and process design: it belongs to a business process owner, not to IT or the partner. IT is responsible for the system, but the business answers for whether the data and the process are right.

#### Using the matrix in practice

**Body:** Use the RACI to set steering committee escalation paths, to staff the project, and to resolve disputes. When an issue arises on a data quality problem, the matrix shows who should fix it and who signs it off. Revisit the RACI at each phase gate because roles shift: partners lead during build, business users lead in UAT and after go-live, and support transitions from the project team to the operations organisation.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Frequent errors are marking everything as responsible for everyone, naming a committee as accountable, and leaving the RACI unchanged after hypercare begins. Another is forgetting the support organisation: if no one is accountable for incident handling after go-live, the project team ends up supporting the system indefinitely.

#### What does RACI stand for?

**Answer:** Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed. It is a responsibility assignment matrix that lists activities in rows and roles in columns, and records the relationship each role has to each activity.

#### Can a role be both responsible and accountable?

**Answer:** Yes. Write it as A/R when the same person both does the work and owns the outcome. The key rule is that each activity has only one accountable role, even if several are responsible.

#### What is the difference between RACI and RASCI?

**Answer:** RASCI adds a Support role for those who assist the responsible party. Many ERP teams keep the simpler RACI and use the Consulted category for people who give input.

#### Who should be accountable for data migration?

**Answer:** Business process owners should be accountable for the accuracy of their data objects, with a data migration lead coordinating the work and IT responsible for extract, transform and load tooling.
