## Content

**Intro:** Final test is where a cable assembly line proves each jumper meets its loss limits. This worksheet gives you the table, the margin math and the batch yield in one place.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the worksheet

**Body:** Enter one row per tested jumper with the measured insertion loss and return loss, then the limits that apply to that product. The sheet computes margin to each limit and flags pass only if both insertion loss and return loss meet their requirements. The batch yield updates as you edit rows, and the whole table exports to Excel for the build record.

**Bullets:**

- Set limits per row so mixed fiber types can share a sheet
- Record the reference method in your work instruction
- Retest failures only after re-clean and re-inspection

#### Insertion loss and return loss

**Body:** Insertion loss is the power lost through the assembly, measured in dB, where a lower number is better. Return loss is the ratio of launched power to reflected power, where a higher number is better. APC connectors reach much higher return loss than UPC. The measurement method matters: insertion loss depends on the reference you set, so follow your reference procedure and keep it consistent across operators.

#### Reading margin and yield

**Body:** A small positive margin on many units is a warning that the process sits near the limit. Look at the average insertion loss and the spread. If most units pass with under 20 percent of the limit left as margin, a small drift in polish, ferrule geometry or cleaning could move yield sharply. Track yield by lot, and investigate any unit that fails return loss, since that often points to end face damage or contamination.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Measuring with a dirty reference lead, failing to re-reference after a connector change, and testing multimode with a source that does not meet launch conditions. Also avoid mixing wavelengths in one row. Test at all wavelengths required by the customer and add a row per wavelength, so every number maps to one condition.

**Cta:** If your test results should flow into serial-level traceability in your ERP, we can help connect tester output to the build record.

**Faq:**

#### What insertion loss limit should I use?

**Answer:** Use the limit on the customer drawing or the applicable standard for the connector grade. Many premium single mode assemblies specify a tighter loss than standard grade. The 0.3 dB shown is an example only, not a universal limit.

#### Is return loss entered as a positive or negative number?

**Answer:** As a positive number of dB where a higher value means less reflection. Some test equipment shows it as negative, so check your instrument and enter the magnitude.

#### How do I handle jumpers tested at two wavelengths?

**Answer:** Add one row per wavelength with the same serial number. The pass flag works per row, and you can filter by serial in Excel to confirm both wavelengths passed before shipping.

#### How is yield calculated?

**Answer:** First pass yield is the number of rows flagged pass divided by the number of rows, as a percent. If you list a unit twice for two wavelengths, count each row as a test rather than a unit.
