## Content

**Intro:** A passive optical network divides one OLT port among many subscribers with a splitter, and the splitter is usually the biggest loss in the path. This calculator adds splitter, fiber, connector and splice losses to show received power and the margin left at the ONT.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the OLT transmit power and the ONT sensitivity from the optic datasheets, then the splitter ratio, excess loss, fiber length and the counts of connector pairs and splices. The tool returns total loss, received power, margin over sensitivity and the maximum reach that still leaves your required design margin. If you use cascaded splitters, run the calculation with the combined ratio and add each stage's excess loss.

**Bullets:**

- Use worst-case attenuation for the wavelength that has the least margin
- Include connectors at patch panels, the splitter cabinet and the ONT
- Keep a design margin for repairs, aging and temperature

#### Formula and reference values

**Body:** An ideal 1:N splitter loses 10 x log10(N) dB, which is 3.01 dB for 1:2, 9.03 dB for 1:8, 15.05 dB for 1:32 and 18.06 dB for 1:64. Real planar lightwave circuit splitters add excess loss, so a 1:32 is commonly quoted near 16.5 to 17.5 dB in total. Total loss is splitter plus length times attenuation plus connectors plus splices, and margin equals transmit power minus total loss minus receiver sensitivity.

#### Worked example

**Body:** With +3 dBm at the OLT, a 1:32 splitter at 1.5 dB excess (16.55 dB), 10 km at 0.35 dB/km (3.5 dB), four connector pairs at 0.3 dB (1.2 dB) and six splices at 0.1 dB (0.6 dB), the total is 21.85 dB. Received power is -18.85 dBm, which is 8.15 dB above a -27 dBm sensitivity. After a 3 dB design margin the line can run about 24 km further than planned, but it must also stay under the standard's logical and differential reach limits.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Designers often forget the overload limit: a short link with a strong OLT can exceed the ONT's maximum input power, which is around -8 dBm for Class B+. Others use the typical rather than maximum splitter loss, or leave out connector pairs at patch panels. Upstream power also needs checking, since the ONT transmit power is lower than the OLT's, and the upstream wavelength has different attenuation.

**Cta:** Netray can connect your project and asset records to checks like this so design assumptions are tracked against what was built.

**Faq:**

#### What is the loss of a 1:32 splitter?

**Answer:** The ideal figure is 15.05 dB. Real splitters add excess loss, so datasheets usually show about 16.5 to 17.5 dB maximum for a 1:32. Use the worst-case figure on your supplier's datasheet.

#### How much margin should a PON design leave?

**Answer:** Many operators design for 3 dB or more above the receiver sensitivity to cover repair splices, connector cleaning issues and aging. Your operator's engineering standard overrides this default.

#### Does this check the ONT overload level?

**Answer:** No. Compare the received power with the ONT's maximum input power as well, otherwise a short link can saturate the receiver. Fixed attenuators are used when received power is too high.

#### Can I model two cascaded splitters?

**Answer:** Yes. Set the ratio to the combined value, for example 1:4 followed by 1:8 is 1:32, and raise the excess loss to the sum of both stages' excess loss. Add the extra connectors at the cabinet.
