## Content

**Intro:** Insertion loss results are the core evidence for any fiber installation. This worksheet logs every fiber and wavelength against its loss budget, calculates the margin and keeps the pass or fail status in one table you can export.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the worksheet

**Body:** Add one row per fiber and wavelength tested. Record the date, link ID, fiber number, wavelength, link length, measured insertion loss and the loss budget for that link. The margin column calculates itself, so anything negative is visible at a glance. Set the result to Pass, Fail or Retest, and note the tester and its serial. The totals show the average and worst measured loss, the smallest margin and the number of records. Export to Excel, CSV or PDF for the handover pack.

**Bullets:**

- Reference the tester with a good launch cord before measuring
- Test each fiber at the wavelengths required in the specification
- Set the budget from the link loss calculation for that exact link
- Log retests as new rows so history is kept

#### Test method behind the log

**Body:** Insertion loss is measured with a stabilized light source at one end and a power meter at the other. The meter and source are first connected with a reference cord to set a zero or reference power, then the link is inserted and the difference is the loss. Common methods are one-cord, two-cord and three-cord references, and the method changes how connector loss at each end is counted. Specify the method in the log notes so the numbers can be compared fairly with the budget.

#### Reading the results

**Body:** Compare measured loss to the budget for the same wavelength. A single-mode link usually shows higher loss at 1310 nm than at 1550 nm because attenuation is greater at the shorter wavelength. A multimode link at 850 nm shows higher loss per kilometer than at 1300 nm. If one fiber in a cable is much higher than the others, suspect a dirty connector or a bad splice on that fiber, not the cable. If all fibers are high, check the reference setup and the budget assumptions.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Frequent errors are re-referencing with a dirty or damaged reference cord, testing without inspecting the end faces, using the wrong wavelength setting on the meter, and comparing results with a budget that did not include all connectors. Failing to record the reference method makes results hard to defend later. Keep a separate connector inspection log and link it to the failing rows when you investigate.

**Cta:** If you want test records attached to work orders, assets or quality records in your ERP, we can discuss a private integration. Reach out if you want to explore it.

**Faq:**

#### What is Tier 1 fiber testing?

**Answer:** Tier 1 certification measures insertion loss (and length) with a light source and power meter, as defined in TIA-568 test practice. Tier 2 adds OTDR traces for event detail. Many contracts require both.

#### Which wavelengths should I test?

**Answer:** Test multimode at 850 and 1300 nm and single-mode at 1310 and 1550 nm. Some specifications also add 1625 nm to find bends. Use the wavelengths stated in your contract.

#### What should I do if a fiber fails?

**Answer:** Clean and inspect the connectors, re-reference the tester, and retest. If it still fails, use an OTDR to locate the event, repair or re-terminate, then retest and log the new result.

#### Can I keep one log for many links?

**Answer:** Yes. The link ID column lets you group results, and you can sort or filter after exporting to Excel. For large projects consider one log per cable or per building to keep files manageable.
