## Content

**Intro:** Overfill is a quiet margin leak. This calculator converts mean fill, variability and product cost into annual giveaway, and shows the opposite risk, the share of packs that fall under label weight.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Take mean and standard deviation from checkweigher data for a single product and line, not an average across shifts. Enter label weight, product cost per kilogram and annual volume. The result shows grams and dollars given away per pack and per year, and the percent of packs expected below label. Use the sweep to see what each gram of mean target costs.

**Bullets:**

- One product, one line, stable run
- Use net weight after tare
- Re-run after any filler or recipe change

#### Method

**Body:** Giveaway equals mean minus label. Annual cost equals giveaway in kilograms times cost per kilogram times packs. The under-label share is the normal cumulative probability of (label minus mean) divided by sd. Cutting standard deviation is worth more than it looks: with less variability you can lower the mean target while keeping the same under-label risk, which is where most savings come from.

#### Example and cautions

**Body:** At 462 g mean on a 454 g label with sd of 4 g, giveaway is 8 g per pack. At $3.20 per kg and 6 million packs that is about $154,000 a year, with only about 2.3 percent of packs under label. Cutting sd to 2 g would let the mean drop toward 458 g at similar risk. Cautions: weights-and-measures rules limit how many packs can be short and by how much, and density or moisture loss after filling can move net weight.

**Cta:** Netray can pull checkweigher and production data into a read-only view in your ERP so giveaway is tracked per product and line.

**Faq:**

#### What is a safe mean fill target?

**Answer:** It depends on your standard deviation and the legal rules in your market. Typically the target is set at label weight plus a multiple of sd, enough that the allowed share of short packs and maximum shortfall rules are met.

#### Is reducing variability better than lowering the target?

**Answer:** Reducing variability usually comes first. A tighter distribution lets you lower the target safely. Lowering the target alone with high sd raises the share of short packs and legal risk.

#### Does moisture loss matter?

**Answer:** Yes. Baked or fried products lose moisture after packing, so the fill weight must cover expected loss until the product reaches the consumer.

#### Can I use grams and ounces?

**Answer:** Any consistent unit works for weights, but the cost per kilogram input assumes grams. Convert ounces to grams before entering values.
