## Content

**Intro:** A heat record is the first document an auditor asks for when a casting fails. It links one melt to its charge materials, chemistry and every casting poured from it. Fill in the fields, print or export it, and sign it at the melt deck.

**Sections:**

#### How to use this template

**Body:** Enter the header fields once per heat, then print the form and complete the charge, chemistry and temperature tables by hand as the melt proceeds. Export to Word if you want to add customer specific rows. The heat number is the anchor for traceability, so use the same string on the pour sheet, the mold tags and the casting marks, and keep it identical to the lot number you enter in the ERP.

**Bullets:**

- One form per heat, never per shift
- Record returns separately from purchased scrap
- Write actual values, not specification limits
- Sign before the first mold is poured

#### What a heat record must capture

**Body:** Most customer specifications and quality systems such as ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 expect traceability from finished casting back to the melt. That means charge composition, chemistry before and after any adjustment, tap and pour temperatures, and treatment details such as magnesium or inoculation practice for ductile iron. Pour temperature drives fluidity and shrinkage, so a record that shows it drifting is an early warning for misruns and shrink porosity.

#### Reading the record after a nonconformance

**Body:** When a defect appears at machining, pull the heat record and compare chemistry to the specification, then compare pour time and temperature to the batch of molds. A high sulfur reading with weak nodularity, or a low final carbon equivalent, points to the melt. Normal chemistry with a cold pour points to ladle handling instead. The record lets you separate melt causes from molding causes quickly.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Records go wrong when they are filled in after the shift from memory, when the same heat number is reused after a furnace is topped up, or when the final sample is taken before treatment. Keep one heat number per furnace charge, and note any addition made after the sample so the chemistry on paper matches the metal in the ladle.

**Cta:** If your heat numbers, lots and certificates live in an ERP, Netray can help link melt data to lot traceability and certificates of conformance on your own servers.

**Faq:**

#### Do I need one record per furnace or per heat?

**Answer:** One record per heat, meaning each distinct melt or furnace charge poured. A furnace that is melted down and refilled several times a shift produces several heats, each with its own number, chemistry and temperatures.

#### How long should foundry melt records be kept?

**Answer:** Follow your customer contract and quality system. Many aerospace, rail and pressure part customers require retention for years or for the life of the program. If nothing is specified, align with your own product liability horizon.

#### Can I add rows for alloying additions?

**Answer:** Yes. Export to Word and add rows to the charge or chemistry tables. Keep the original headings so the record remains familiar to operators and auditors.

#### Is this the same as a material test report?

**Answer:** No. A material test report is the certified result sent to the customer. The heat record is the internal production document that supports it, with more process detail.
