## Content

**Intro:** CBM is cubic metres, the unit that freight forwarders use to price and plan sea shipments. This calculator converts carton dimensions into volume, then estimates how many containers a furniture or apparel shipment needs.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the outer carton length, width and height in centimetres, the gross weight and the total number of cartons. Choose the container type and set a practical loading efficiency. The result gives volume per carton, total CBM, the cartons that fit in one container and the number of containers needed. Use the chart to see how container count steps up with order size, which helps decide whether to top up a shipment.

**Bullets:**

- Use outer carton dimensions
- Include pallets in the dimension if used
- Check payload as well as volume
- Keep loading efficiency realistic
- Confirm with the forwarder

#### The formula and its limits

**Body:** Carton CBM equals length times width times height in centimetres divided by one million. Containers needed equal total CBM divided by usable CBM per container, rounded up. Usable volume is internal volume times efficiency. Real loading depends on carton orientation, door clearances and stacking height, so the true number can be higher or lower. Bulky, light goods tend to hit volume limits first, while dense goods may reach weight limits before the container is full.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** Frequent errors are using inner product dimensions instead of outer carton size, ignoring pallet height, and forgetting weight limits. Store carton dimensions and gross weight on the item or packaging master in your ERP, so that shipment planning, packing lists and freight cost allocation use the same figures. That also helps compute freight per unit for landed cost.

**Cta:** If carton data is inconsistent between packing lists and your ERP, we can help review how packaging data is held and used.

**Faq:**

#### How do I calculate CBM for a carton?

**Answer:** Multiply length, width and height in centimetres, then divide by 1,000,000. A carton of 120 by 60 by 45 cm is 0.324 cubic metres. Multiply by the number of cartons for the shipment total.

#### How many cubic metres fit in a 40 ft container?

**Answer:** A standard 40 ft container has roughly 67 cubic metres of internal volume, and a high cube about 76. Practical loadable volume is lower, commonly 80 to 90 percent, because of gaps and carton shapes.

#### Does this check weight limits?

**Answer:** It shows average weight per container so you can compare it with the payload allowed by your container line and the road limits in your country. It does not enforce any limit, so confirm with your forwarder.

#### When is LCL better than a full container?

**Answer:** If total volume is a small fraction of a container, less-than-container-load can be cheaper. Compare the forwarder's LCL rate per CBM against a full container rate, as the break-even is often well below full capacity.
