## Content

**Intro:** Board is usually the biggest material cost in cabinets, wardrobes and office furniture, and the yield of each cutting pattern decides how much of it ends up as parts. This calculator checks the simple grid layout for a repeated part and gives yield, sheets and cost per part.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the sheet size, the edge trim removed on each side, the part size, the saw kerf, the quantity and the sheet price. The tool tests the part in both orientations and uses the better one. Use the chart to see how much yield each extra millimeter of kerf costs on a narrow part.

**Bullets:**

- Check the supplier's actual sheet size, as nominal sizes vary
- Add the edge banding thickness to the part size if you cut oversize
- If grain direction matters, use only the orientation that allows it

#### The formula

**Body:** Along a dimension, the number of parts is floor((usable + kerf) / (part + kerf)), because every part except the last is followed by a cut. Parts per sheet is the product of the counts along both axes. Yield is parts x part area / sheet area. Sheets needed is the quantity divided by parts per sheet, rounded up, and cost per part is sheets x price / quantity.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A yield in the 70s may be fine for a single repeated part, but a mixed cutting list usually lets a nesting package do better by filling off-cuts with small parts. Compare the result with your actual consumption in the ERP: a big gap points to off-cut waste, scrapped parts or an inaccurate BOM quantity per unit.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Planners often ignore edge trim, forget the kerf between parts, or use gross sheet area when they report yield. Others confuse part size with finished size after edge banding. For furniture with grain or pattern, rotating a part may not be allowed, so the true yield is the unrotated figure. Always add a small overage for machine setup and rejects.

**Cta:** If your furniture BOMs and cutting lists are in an ERP, we can build a read-only assistant that compares planned and actual board consumption per order and highlights the worst variances.

**Faq:**

#### What is a typical saw kerf?

**Answer:** Panel saw blades usually remove about 3 to 4 mm, thin-kerf blades somewhat less, and CNC routers use a cutter diameter instead. Use the actual tool width, since kerf compounds across many cuts in a pattern.

#### Is this the same as nesting software?

**Answer:** No. It evaluates one repeated part in a regular grid. Nesting software optimizes many part sizes at once and can mix patterns. Use this for quick estimates and quotes, and nesting software for production cutting lists.

#### How do I include edge banding?

**Answer:** If the part is cut oversize, add the banding and trim allowance to the part length and width before entering. If it is cut to final size and banded afterwards, enter the final part size.

#### Why does yield change when I rotate the part?

**Answer:** Parts per sheet is a whole number in each direction, so a small change in part size can drop a whole row. The rotated layout may fit another row. The calculator tests both and reports the better result.
