## Category

mes-shop-floor

## Industry

Textile & Apparel

## Audience

- Plant manager
- Industrial engineer
- Production planner
- Sewing line supervisor

## Tool

**Kind:** calculator

**Inputs:**

#### Style SAM

**Key:** sam

**Type:** number

**Default:** 14.5

**Min:** 0.5

**Step:** 0.1

**Unit:** min/pc

**Help:** Standard allowed minutes for the whole garment, from your time study or method sheet.

#### Direct operators on line

**Key:** operators

**Type:** number

**Default:** 40

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** people

**Help:** Count sewing operators only. Add helpers separately in the labor rate if you want them costed.

#### Working hours per day

**Key:** hours

**Type:** number

**Default:** 8

**Min:** 1

**Max:** 14

**Step:** 0.5

**Unit:** hours

#### Line efficiency

**Key:** eff

**Type:** slider

**Default:** 60

**Min:** 20

**Max:** 100

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** %

#### Labor cost per operator per day

**Key:** wage

**Type:** number

**Default:** 30

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** $/day

**Help:** Fully loaded daily cost including benefits, in the currency shown.

#### Order quantity

**Key:** order_qty

**Type:** number

**Default:** 12000

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 100

**Unit:** pieces

**Outputs:**

#### Available minutes per day

**Key:** avail

**Expr:** operators * hours * 60

**Format:** number

**Description:** Operators x hours x 60.

#### Earned minutes per day

**Key:** earned

**Expr:** avail * eff / 100

**Format:** number

**Description:** Available minutes x efficiency.

#### Daily output

**Key:** output

**Expr:** earned / sam

**Format:** integer

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Pieces per day at this efficiency.

#### Pieces per operator

**Key:** per_op

**Expr:** output / operators

**Format:** decimal

#### Labor cost per piece

**Key:** labor_pc

**Expr:** operators * wage / output

**Format:** currency

**Description:** Direct labor only.

#### Days to complete order

**Key:** days

**Expr:** order_qty / output

**Format:** days

**Primary:** true

**Chart:**

#### Daily output vs line efficiency

**Type:** line

**X:** eff

**From:** 30

**To:** 90

**Steps:** 25

**Series:**

- output

**Currency:** $

**Disclaimer:** Planning estimate. Real output also depends on absenteeism, learning curve, style changeovers and bundle flow.

## Content

**Intro:** SAM, the standard allowed minute, is the time a trained operator needs to make a garment at standard pace. With the line size and efficiency you can predict output, cost and delivery date. This calculator does all three in one place.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the style SAM from your method study, the number of direct operators, the working hours and the efficiency you expect. Use the efficiency actually achieved on similar styles, not a target you hope for. Add the daily cost per operator and the order quantity to get cost per piece and the number of days to ship.

**Bullets:**

- Use efficiency from the last three runs of similar styles, not the budget
- Include only operators that sew; costing helpers needs an extra line
- Slide efficiency to see how a 5 point slip changes the ship date

#### The formulas

**Body:** Available minutes = operators x hours x 60. Earned minutes = available minutes x efficiency. Output = earned minutes / SAM. Labor cost per piece = daily labor cost of the line / daily output. Efficiency is earned minutes divided by available minutes, so the same relationship can be run backwards: efficiency = output x SAM / available minutes. This is the same logic most apparel ERPs and MES use to plan lines.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** Output is linear in efficiency, but labor cost per piece is hyperbolic: dropping from 60 to 40 percent raises cost per piece by half, not by a third. The chart makes the delivery risk visible. Compare days to complete with the days between fabric in-house and ex-factory date, then decide on overtime, extra operators or a split of the order across lines.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Teams often use a SAM that excludes allowances, mix up SAM with the actual cycle time, or apply 8 hours when the line actually loses time to breaks, power cuts and material waits. Use paid hours minus lost time as working hours if you want accuracy. Also note that learning-curve days at the start of a new style run at much lower efficiency than steady state.

**Cta:** If SAM, line plans and production reports sit in your ERP or MES, we can set up a read-only assistant that compares planned and achieved efficiency per style and flags late orders.

**Faq:**

#### What is a good line efficiency for sewing?

**Answer:** It varies widely by style complexity, operator skill and line balance. Many plants run roughly between 50 and 80 percent on steady styles. Use your own history for the same product type instead of a general benchmark.

#### How is SAM different from SMV?

**Answer:** They mean the same idea: standard minute value and standard allowed minute are both time for a task or garment at standard pace including allowances. Different companies and ERPs use different names, so confirm how allowances are treated.

#### Does the calculator account for helpers and supervisors?

**Answer:** No. Output is based on sewing operators. For a fully loaded cost, add helpers, line supervisor and quality checkers into the daily cost figure, or divide that total by the operators included.

#### Can I use it for a cutting or finishing section?

**Answer:** Yes, if you have a SAM for the cutting or finishing task per piece. The math is identical. Just change the operators and SAM to match that section and read the output as pieces cut or finished per day.
