## Content

**Intro:** Hardness is the quick check that proves a heat treatment or a material lot. This template gives you a clean record of readings, requirement and result that can go into the lot file.

**Sections:**

#### How to record a hardness test

**Body:** Enter the part, lot, material condition and the requirement from the drawing. Select the scale and note the tester and its calibration status. Print or export the report, then record several readings per sample at the locations required by the specification. Calculate the average, decide the result and sign. Keep the record with the batch so it can be retrieved during customer audits.

**Bullets:**

- Verify the tester on a test block first
- Use the scale named on the drawing
- Take readings away from edges and prior indents
- Record every reading, not only the average

#### Choosing and reading the scale

**Body:** Rockwell C suits hardened steel, Rockwell B softer steels and copper alloys, Brinell is common for castings and large sections, and Vickers suits thin sections and case depth surveys. A reading is only valid when the surface is flat, clean and supported, and when the material thickness is enough for the load. Conversions between scales are approximate tables, so judge acceptance in the scale the drawing specifies.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Frequent problems are testing on a decarburized or scale-covered surface, reading too close to an edge, and using a tester whose calibration has lapsed. Another is accepting a lot on a single reading when the specification requires several. If a result fails, hold the lot, verify the tester with the test block, and follow your nonconformance process before any reheat treatment is decided.

**Bullets:**

- Grind off scale before testing
- Check indent spacing
- Retain the test block certificate

**Cta:** If hardness results live on paper or in spreadsheets, we can help you bring them into ERP quality records and link them to lots.

**Faq:**

#### Which hardness scale should I use?

**Answer:** Use the scale on the drawing or specification. If none is given, HRC fits hardened steels, HRB suits softer steels and copper alloys, and HBW suits castings and forgings. Do not swap scales without engineering approval.

#### How many readings are required?

**Answer:** It depends on the specification and part size. A common practice is at least three readings per location, but your drawing, customer or standard sets the rule. Record all readings and the average.

#### Can I convert HRC to HB for acceptance?

**Answer:** Only if the specification allows it. Conversion tables are approximate, and results vary with material. Acceptance should use the specified scale, and conversions are best used for guidance only.

#### How often should the tester be verified?

**Answer:** Verify on a certified test block at the start of each shift or test session, and keep up the periodic calibration required by the standard and your quality system. Record the block used on every report.
