## Content

**Intro:** Welding, cutting and grinding start a large share of industrial fires. A hot work permit forces a pause to check the area, assign a fire watch and confirm the fire protection systems before sparks fly.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the permit

**Body:** The authorizing individual walks the area with the performer. Fill in the exact location, work type, time window and the combustibles you found and how you controlled them. Work through the precaution table and tick each item only after you have seen it. Name a fire watch who is not doing other work. After the job, the fire watch stays for the period set in your program and signs off. Keep the permit at the work location while work is in progress, and file it afterward. Export to PDF for printing.

#### Standards behind the form

**Body:** NFPA 51B is the usual reference for fire prevention during welding, cutting and other hot work. It expects the area to be inspected, combustibles removed or protected, a fire watch during the work, and a watch period afterward, commonly at least 30 minutes, with many insurers asking for 60 minutes or more. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252 covers welding, cutting and brazing in general industry. Your property insurer may add its own permit rules, so check your policy conditions.

**Bullets:**

- Move or protect combustibles around and below the work
- Keep suitable extinguishing equipment at hand
- Dedicated fire watch during and after the work
- Authorize detector impairment separately

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Typical failures are using the permit as a rubber stamp without an inspection, letting the welder act as their own fire watch, ignoring combustibles on the other side of a wall or floor, and ending the fire watch the moment the arc stops. Sparks can travel well beyond the immediate area and smolder for an hour. Contractors often arrive without knowing the site rules, so brief them on the alarm, assembly point and extinguisher locations before the permit is signed.

**Cta:** If you want hot work permit requirements attached automatically to maintenance work orders in your ERP, Netray can talk through the approach.

**Faq:**

#### How long must a fire watch continue after hot work?

**Answer:** NFPA 51B sets a minimum period after work is finished, commonly at least 30 minutes, and many insurers and sites require 60 minutes or more. Use the longer of your insurer, site program and local rule.

#### Is a permit needed for grinding?

**Answer:** Grinding produces sparks that can ignite combustibles, so most programs treat it as hot work. Some sites exempt designated welding shops with controlled conditions. Define the exemption in your program and document it.

#### Can one person be both welder and fire watch?

**Answer:** No. The fire watch must be able to watch for fires and raise the alarm, which they cannot do while performing the work. Assign a separate trained person.

#### Who may authorize a hot work permit?

**Answer:** A trained individual designated in your program, often a supervisor or safety representative who is responsible for the area. They must be able to inspect the site and verify precautions.
