## Content

**Intro:** To calculate sheet metal part cost, add material (net weight divided by sheet utilization), cutting time, bending time, finishing, setup spread over the batch, then apply a margin. This calculator does the arithmetic and also shows price per square foot of blank.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the flat blank size and thickness, pick the material and its price per kilogram. Set utilization to the nesting yield you actually achieve, since the scrap skeleton is paid for by the part. Enter laser or punch time per part, the number of bends and minutes per bend, and your shop rate. Add finishing and hardware cost per part, setup hours per batch and the batch quantity. The primary results are cost and selling price per part, and the chart shows how price falls as batch size grows.

**Bullets:**

- Use the flat blank size, not the finished envelope
- Measure utilization from real nests
- Use a burdened shop rate
- Check the quantity chart before quoting small lots

#### The formula for sheet metal part cost

**Body:** Net weight in kilograms is length times width times thickness in millimeters times density in g/cm3, divided by one million. Material cost is net weight divided by utilization, times price per kilogram. Process cost is time in hours times shop rate, for cutting and for bending separately. Setup per part is setup hours times rate divided by batch quantity. Add finishing and hardware to get cost, then divide cost by one minus margin to get price.

#### Worked example and price per square foot

**Body:** A 400 by 250 mm mild steel blank, 2 mm thick, weighs about 1.57 kg. At 75% utilization and 1.15 per kg, material is about 2.41. Cutting 1.6 minutes and four bends at 0.5 minute each at 85 per hour add about 2.27 and 2.83. Setup over 50 parts adds 1.28 and finishing 2.40. Cost is about 11.19 and price at a 20% margin is about 13.99. The blank has about 1.08 square feet on one face, so price per square foot is about 13. Use that figure to compare quotes, but only for similar complexity, because bends and finish drive cost more than area.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Shops often cost material on net weight and forget the skeleton, which can understate material by a quarter or more. Others price cutting by sheet area rather than cut length and pierces, so thick or intricate parts are underpriced. Setup on small batches is the other trap: a one-off part carries the full setup, which is why the quantity chart matters. Add a minimum order charge for tiny jobs and re-measure times when the job closes.

**Cta:** If your nests, routings and actual job costs already live in an ERP, Netray can add a private on-prem AI layer to compare quoted and actual cost by part. The calculator works standalone.

**Faq:**

#### How do you calculate the cost of a sheet metal part?

**Answer:** Compute material from net weight divided by sheet utilization, add cutting and bending time at your shop rate, add finishing and hardware, spread setup over the batch, then divide by one minus your target margin to get the selling price.

#### What is sheet metal cost per square foot?

**Answer:** It is the price of a part divided by the area of its flat blank in square feet. It is a rough comparison metric. Simple flat parts may be a few dollars per square foot while bent, welded or finished parts cost far more, so compare like with like.

#### Why does utilization matter?

**Answer:** You buy the whole sheet but sell only the parts. If only 70% of the sheet becomes parts, the other 30% is scrap that the parts must carry unless you recover scrap value. Better nesting lowers material cost directly.

#### What shop rate should I use?

**Answer:** Use a fully burdened hourly rate for the machine and operator, including depreciation, power, maintenance and indirect labor. It is typically much higher than operator wages. Derive it from your annual machine cost divided by productive hours.
