## Content

**Intro:** Before a vessel or spool goes to hydrotest, the test team needs the test pressure, the gauge range and an idea of how much water to bring. This calculator works out all three from MAWP, stress ratio and basic vessel geometry.

**Sections:**

#### How to use this calculator

**Body:** Enter the MAWP from the nameplate, the lowest stress ratio and the test factor your code uses. Add the shell inside diameter, tangent length and number of 2:1 elliptical heads. The calculator shows the hydrostatic test pressure, a gauge range that follows the common practice of a dial reading between 1.5 and 4 times the test pressure, the fill volume and the water weight. Use the weight to check the test stand, skids and foundation.

#### The formula behind it

**Body:** For ASME Section VIII Division 1 vessels the standard hydrostatic test pressure is 1.3 times the MAWP times the lowest stress ratio, where the stress ratio compares allowable stress at test temperature with that at design temperature. Older editions used 1.5, and other codes use their own factors, so the calculator lets you choose. Volume uses a cylinder formula plus pi over 24 times the diameter cubed for each 2:1 ellipsoidal head, which is the volume of half an oblate ellipsoid with a 2:1 aspect.

**Bullets:**

- Test pressure = factor x MAWP x lowest stress ratio
- Shell volume = pi/4 x D squared x L, divided by 231 for gallons
- 2:1 head volume = pi/24 x D cubed each
- Water weight = gallons x 8.34 lb

#### Worked example and mistakes

**Body:** A 48 in ID vessel with 144 in tangent length, two 2:1 heads and a 300 psig MAWP at a stress ratio of 1.0 gives a test pressure of 390 psig. Shell volume is about 1,128 US gallons and the heads add about 188, for roughly 1,316 gallons or 11,000 lb of water. Typical mistakes include forgetting the stress ratio on elevated temperature designs, using a gauge range that is too wide to read accurately and ignoring static head for tall vertical vessels.

**Cta:** If your test pressures and vessel data sit in design reports and PDFs, we can discuss a private tool that pulls them straight into test procedures and travelers.

**Faq:**

#### Is 1.3 times MAWP always correct?

**Answer:** It applies to ASME Section VIII Division 1 vessels built to current editions. Older editions, other divisions, piping codes and European standards use different factors, so choose the one your code requires.

#### What is the lowest stress ratio?

**Answer:** It is the smallest ratio of allowable stress at test temperature to allowable stress at design temperature across the pressure retaining parts. At ambient testing of a high temperature design, it can be above one, but the code may cap its use.

#### Why does gauge range matter?

**Answer:** Gauges read most accurately in the middle of the dial. A common rule is that the dial range should be between 1.5 and 4 times the test pressure, with 2 times preferred, and the gauge must be calibrated.

#### Does this include nozzles and piping?

**Answer:** No. It estimates the shell and heads only. Add the volume of nozzles, attached piping, exchanger tubes or jackets from your own drawings if you need a precise fill figure.
